instilling in your soul. Behold, this world is like a dream; all things will pass away, but he who does the will of the Lord will live forever and will not die. With these thoughts always renewing your soul, rejoice, for great is your reward in the heavens. 240 {1To Dorotheos, another child}1 Good Dorotheos, rejoice; may grace and mercy be to you from God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who strengthened you to give yourself up on his behalf to scourgings and stripes, to prison and exile. From where did this good thing come to you? From the obscure you have become renowned, from the inglorious, glorious, from a lesser rank among your brothers in the Lord, great and honorable. Do you see how I, the humble one, speak with you? Many of those who lead you desire to receive a syllable from me, but to you comes this letter with encomiums; for thus God glorifies those who glorify him. Praise God, give thanks, that he has done great and wondrous things for you, to be called his confessor now among the Christians. You have outshone many bishops, many abbots, many hermits, shining brightly in the church; see your calling, see your glory. Do not grow drowsy, do not fall away, struggle in patience until death; for he who endures to the end, he, it says, will be saved. With all vigilance guard yourself not to be carried away in any passion of dishonor; for this too is a great martyrdom, to keep the conscience pure from sin. Cleanse it always through repentance, through tears, through prayers, praying also for me, the sinner, that I may be saved from every evil work. Your brothers who are with me greet you warmly. May God, my beloved child, guard you in all things unharmed and uninjured, as you complete the contest set before you in the Lord. Amen. 241 {1To Titus and Philo, children}1 O good Titus and O my good Philo, what is this strange sight, that out of your many brothers you have been chosen by God to confess him and for this reason to be in prison? Surely it is because you have loved much, surely it is because you have truly believed. I bless, therefore, my God and Lord, who has done great things in you. See, brothers, as I also wrote to you before, stand nobly, without indifference, mightily, as you were called by God; glorify him in your members, do not accept the teaching of a heretic, do not shrink from the hardship of prison, hearing the one who says that through many tribulations we must enter into the kingdom of heaven. Remember me also, the sinner. The brothers with me greet you; The Lord be with you. Amen. 242 {1To Nicolas the mancips}1 How do you think I receive your dispatches and blessings, beloved man? Not even so many talents of gold would be sweeter for me to receive, because they are from an orthodox man, who preserves ancient love and has not been captured by communion with heresy; which indeed greatly amazes me, how you remain unburnt in the midst of fire. But indeed you will still remain so by divine providence, so that you may offer the great gift of your own salvation to God. And I was very much cheered and have blessed you, because you received the letter-carrier on a feast day as a dinner-guest in a strange place and at a bountiful table; for which the Lord will make you recline on that day with Abraham and Isaac into everlasting joy. 243 {1To Isidore the layman}1 And again I have given you troubles, man of God and genuine friend, with your dispatches; but the Lord will measure out to you a heavenly reward, which you need from the Lord, on whose behalf you also pursue a life of virginity and piety, spending your time in churches, occupied in works of piety as a lover of monks, as one unfeigned, managing your house according to the patriarch Jacob. I still urge you to hold to orthodoxy and abstinence from heretical communion, on account of which we will have boldness before the judgment seat of Christ. Remember us when you make your holy prayers, my most honored and most longed-for one. 244 {1To an Abbess}1 The brother reported to me that he had seen your honorableness and that you are strong in spirit, holding fast to hope through patience. And indeed I glorified our good God,
