Muawiya permitted a great outfitting of the ships for his fleet to go up against Constantinople. The entire preparation was in Tripoli of Phoenicia. When two certain Christ-loving brothers staying in Tripoli, sons of Bucinator, saw this, they were wounded with zeal for God and rushed to the city's prison (which held a multitude of Roman prisoners), and after breaking down the gates and freeing the prisoners, they rushed upon the emir of the city, and after killing both him and those with him and consuming all the equipment with fire, they sailed away to Roman territory. Nevertheless, they did not in this way cease from the same outfitting; but while Muawiya marched on Caesarea in Cappadocia, he appointed Aboulathar as commander of the same shipbuilding. Who, arriving at the so-called Phoenix of Lycia, where the emperor Constans was with the Roman fleet, fought a naval battle with 346 him. And as the emperor was about to fight the naval battle, he saw in a dream that night that he was in Thessalonica. And when he awoke he recounted the vision to a certain dream-interpreter. And he said: "O emperor, would that you had not slept, nor had you seen a dream. For your being in Thessalonica is interpreted as 'give victory to another,' that is, the victory turns to your enemy." And as the emperor did nothing towards deploying for a naval battle, the Roman fleet demanded to go to war. And engaging one another, the Romans are defeated, and the sea is mingled with the blood of the Romans. And the emperor dressed another man in his own garment. And the aforementioned son of Bucinator, leaping into the imperial ship, seized the emperor and, transferring him to another ship, miraculously saved him. But he himself, bravely taking his stand on the imperial ship, killed many, the most noble one, giving himself over to death for the emperor. The enemies, surrounding and seizing him in their midst, thought that he was the emperor. And after he killed many, the enemies killed him along with the one wearing the imperial garment. And the emperor, having been thus routed, is saved, and leaving all behind sailed away to Constantinople. 14. 10. 3. In this year Uthman, the leader of the Arabs, was assassinated by those in Yathrib, having been emir for 10 years. And a disturbance arose among them. For as many as were in the desert wanted Ali, a cousin of Ali, who was the son-in-law of Muhammad; but those throughout Syria and Egypt wanted Muawiya; who was also victorious and held power for 24 years. Since Constans was not strong enough to convert them to his own heresy, he cut off the divinely-wise and most learned tongue of the saint, along with his right hand, as he had written very many things against his impiety with his disciples, the Anastasii, which things they also wrote down word for word, as the learned know. 17. 3. ʹ. In this year an agreement was made between the Romans and the Arabs, as Muawiya sent an embassy on account of the rebellion, that the Arabs should pay the Romans one thousand nomismata per day, and a horse, and a slave. And there was also a great earthquake in this time and a collapse in both Palestine and Syria in the month of Dasius, in the 2nd indiction. Τούτῳ τῷ ἔτει ἐδολοφονήθη Οὐθμάν, ὁ τῶν Ἀράβων ἀρχηγός, ὑπὸ τῶν ἐν Ἐθρίβοις, ἀμηρεύσας ἔτη ιʹ. γέγονε δὲ ἀνασοβὴ μέσον αὐτῶν. ὅσοι γὰρ κατὰ τὴν ἔρημον ὑπῆρχον, τὸν Ἀλὴ ἤθελον, ἀνεψιὸν τοῦ Ἀλή, γαμβρὸν ὄντα τοῦ Μουάμεδ· οἱ δὲ κατὰ Συρίαν καὶ Αἴγυπτον τὸν Μαυΐαν ἤθελον· ὃς καὶ ἐνίκησε καὶ ἐκράτησεν ἔτη κδʹ. Ἀράβων ἀρχηγὸς Μαυΐας ἔτη κδʹ. ιεʹ. αʹ. δʹ. Τούτῳ τῷ ἔτει ἐπεστράτευσε Μαυΐας κατὰ Ἀλή· καὶ συναθροί347 ζονται ἀμφότεροι ἀναμέσον Βαρβαλισσοῦ εἰς τὸ Καισάριον πλησίον τοῦ Εὐφράτου. οἱ δὲ τοῦ Μαυΐου ἐπικρατέστεροι γεγονότες τὸ ὕδωρ ἔλαβον· εἰς δίψαν δὲ ἐλθόντες οἱ τοῦ Ἀλὴ ἐλιποτάκτουν. Μαυΐας δὲ οὐκ ἤθελε πολεμῆσαι· ἀλλ' ἀπονητὶ τὴν νίκην ἤρατο. ιʹ. βʹ. εʹ. Τούτῳ τῷ ἔτει ἐπεστράτευσεν ὁ βασιλεὺς κατὰ Σκλαυινίας καὶ ᾐχμαλώτευσε πολλοὺς καὶ ὑπέταξεν. τῷ δ' αὐτῷ ἔτει καὶ τὰ κατὰ τὸν ἅγιον Μάξιμον καὶ τοὺς μαθητὰς αὐτοῦ ἐπράχθη ὑπὲρ τῆς ὀρθῆς πίστεως ἀγωνισαμένων κατὰ τῶν Μονοθελητῶν. οὓς Κώνστας εἰς τὴν ἑαυτοῦ κακοδοξίαν μὴ ἰσχύσας μετενέγκαι, τὴν θεόσοφον καὶ πολυμαθεστάτην γλῶσσαν τοῦ ἁγίου ἀπέτεμε μετὰ τῆς δεξιᾶς χειρὸς αὐτοῦ, ὡς πλεῖστα κατὰ τῆς αὐτοῦ δυσσεβείας σὺν τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ Ἀναστασίοις συγγραψαμένου, ἃ καὶ κατ' ἔπος οὗτοι γεγράφασιν, ὡς οἱ φιλομαθεῖς γινώσκουσιν. ιζʹ. γʹ. ʹ. Τούτῳ τῷ ἔτει ἐστοιχήθη μεταξὺ Ῥωμαίων καὶ Ἀράβων, τοῦ Μαυΐου πρεσβεύσαντος διὰ τὴν ἀνταρσίαν, ἵνα τελῶσι τοῖς Ῥωμαίοις οἱ Ἄραβες καθ' ἡμέραν νομίσματα χίλια καὶ ἵππον καὶ δοῦλον. γέγονε δὲ καὶ σεισμὸς μέγας ἐν τούτῳ τῷ χρόνῳ καὶ πτῶσις ἔν τε τῇ Παλαιστίνῃ καὶ Συρίᾳ μηνὶ ∆αισίῳ ἰνδικτιῶνος βʹ. Τῷ δ' αὐτῷ ἔτει ἐξωρίσθη Μαρτῖνος, ὁ ἁγιώτατος πάπας Ῥώμης, ὑπὲρ τῆς ἀληθείας γενναίως ἀγωνισάμενος καὶ ὁμολογητὴς γενόμενος, ἐν τοῖς κλίμασι τῆς ἀνατολῆς
