because when we saw him hungry, we did not feed him. For it is better to endure ten thousand thunderbolts, than to see that gentle face turning away from us, and that calm eye not bearing to look upon us. For if He so pursued me when I was an enemy, hating Him and turning away, as not even to spare Himself, but to give Himself up to death; when after all that I do not even count Him worthy of bread when He is starving, with what eyes then shall I look upon Him? Consider also His gentleness here. For He does not mention the benefits, nor that you overlooked the one who had benefited you so much. For He does not say: 'Me, who brought you from non-being into being, who breathed into you a soul, and set you over all things on the earth, who for your sake made earth and heaven and sea and air and all that exists, who was dishonored by you, and thought to be more dishonorable than the devil, and even so did not depart, but devised countless things after this, who chose to become a servant, who was struck and spat upon, who was slain, who died the most shameful death, who also intercedes for you above, who grants you the Spirit, who deems you worthy of a kingdom, who promises such things, who willed to be your head, and bridegroom, and garment, and house, and root, and food, and drink, and shepherd, and king, and brother, and chose you as an heir and fellow-heir, who brought you from darkness into the dominion of light.' For though He has these things and more than these to say, He says none of them; but what? Only the sin itself. And here He shows His love, and displays the longing He has for you. For He did not even say, 'Depart into the fire prepared for you,' but, 'The one prepared for the devil.' And first He says what they did wrong, and not even so does He endure to say everything, but only a few things. And before this He calls those who have done well, so that from this He may show that He rebukes justly. Of what punishment, then, are these words not more grievous? For if someone saw a human benefactor starving, he would not overlook him; and if he did overlook him, being reproached he would choose rather to sink into the earth, than to hear these things in the presence of two or three friends; what will we suffer, hearing these things in the presence of the whole world, things He would not even have said then, if He had not been eager to defend His own actions? For that He brought these things forward not to reproach, but in His own defense, and to show that it was not in vain nor without reason that He said to them, 'Depart from me,' is clear from His unspeakable benefits. For if He wanted to reproach, He would have brought all those things forward; but now He speaks only of what He suffered. 9. Let us fear, therefore, beloved, to hear these words. Life is not a game; or rather, the present life is a game, but the things to come are not a game. Perhaps life is not just a game, but even worse than this. For it does not end in laughter, but brings great harm to those not willing to manage their own affairs with precision. For in what, tell me, do we who build splendid 57.319 houses differ from children playing and building houses? in what do we who live luxuriously differ from them when they play at making feasts? In nothing, except that we do these things with punishment. But if we do not yet perceive the cheapness of the things that are done, it is no wonder; for we have not yet become men; but when we do, we will know that all these things are childish. Since even we laugh at them when we become men; but when we are children we think these things are very important, and gathering shards and mud, we think no less of ourselves than those who erect great walls. But nevertheless it is immediately destroyed and falls down, and nowhere could it be useful to us while standing, just as neither are these splendid houses. For they would not be able to receive the citizen of heaven, nor would he who has the fatherland above endure to remain in them; but just as we tear these things down with our feet, so he too overturns them with his mind. And just as we laugh at the children when they cry over the destruction; so also they, when we lament these things, do not
