having died. 18. 4. 7. In this year Constans killed Theodosios, his own brother. And while the Arabs were at Sapphin, Ali, he of Persia, was assassinated; and Muawiya became sole ruler, having established his royal residence in Damascus and having deposited there the treasures of his money. 19. 5. 8. In this year a heresy of the Arabs appeared, those called the Charurgitai. And Muawiya, having subdued these, humbled those in Persia, but exalted those in Syria; and he called the former Isamitai, 348 and the latter Herakitai. And he raised the stipends of the Isamitai to 200 nomismata, but lowered those of the Herakitai to 30 nomismata. 20. . 9. In this year the emperor, leaving Constantinople, moved to Syracuse in Sicily, wishing to transfer the empire to Rome. And he sent to bring his wife and his three sons, Constantine, Heraclius, and Tiberius; but the Byzantines did not let them go. 21. 7. 10. In this year the Arabs campaigned against Roman territory and took many captive and laid waste to many places. 22. 8. 11. In this year part of Sicily was taken captive, and they were settled in Damascus by their own will. 23. 9. 12. In this year there was confusion concerning the fasts. And Abd ar-Rahman, the son of Khaled, campaigned against Roman territory and wintered in it and devastated many regions. And five thousand Sklavinoi, having deserted to him, went down with him into Syria, and were settled in the territory of Apamea in the village of Seleukobolos. Thomas, bishop of Constantinople, for 3 years. 24. 10. 1. In this year Busur campaigned against Roman territory; and Thōmarichos, the bishop of Apamea, died; and the bishop of Emesa was burned. 25. 11. 2. In this year Busur again campaigned against Roman territory and ravaged the regions of Hexapolis, and Phadalas wintered there. 26. 12. 3. In this year the strategos of the Armeniacs, Saborios Persogenes, rebelled against Constans the emperor and sent to Muawiya 349 Sergius the stratelates, promising Muawiya to subject Roman territory to him, if he would ally with him against the emperor. But Constantine, the son of the emperor, having learned this, himself also sent Andrew the koubikoularios to Muawiya with gifts, so that he would not support the rebel. And when Andrew reached Damascus he found that Sergius had arrived first, and Muawiya pretended to sympathize with the emperor. And Sergius was sitting with Muawiya, and when Andrew entered, Sergius, seeing him, rose up. But Muawiya rebuked Sergius, saying: "Why were you a coward?" But Sergius defended himself, saying he had done this out of habit. And Muawiya turning said to Andrew: "What do you seek?" And he said: "That you give help against the rebel." And he said. "You are both enemies; and I give to the one who offers me more." And Andrew said to him: "Do not doubt, amir, that a little from an emperor is better for you than a great deal from a rebel; however, do as you please." And having said these things, Andrew fell silent. And Muawiya said: "I will consider this;" and he ordered both to withdraw. And Muawiya, having summoned Sergius privately, said to him: "Do not bow to Andrew again, since you will accomplish nothing." And on the next day Sergius, arriving before Andrew, sat down with Muawiya. And when Andrew entered, he did not rise up as he had yesterday. But Andrew, looking around at Sergius, insulted him terribly and threatened him, saying: "If I live, I will show you who I am." But Sergius said: "I do not rise for you, because you are neither a man, nor a woman." And Muawiya, stopping them both, said to Andrew: "Agree to give as Sergius is giving;" "And how much is it?" said Andrew. And Muawiya said: "To give the public revenues to the Arabs." And Andrew said: "Alas for you, Muawiya, you advise us to give the body, but keep the shadow. As you wish, agree with Sergius; for I will not do this. But passing you by, we take refuge in God, as being more powerful than you to defend the Romans, and on him our hopes
