and the women, that there be no disturbance, and that no one nod, or whisper, or fall asleep. Let the subdeacons stand at the men's doors, and the deaconesses at the women's doors, so that no one may go out, nor the door be opened, even if one is faithful, during the time of the anaphora. And let one subdeacon give water to the priests for the washing of hands, a symbol of the purity of souls consecrated to God. And I, James, the brother of John the son of Zebedee, say that the deacon should immediately say: Let there be none of the catechumens, none of the hearers, none of the unbelievers, none of the heterodox. You who are praying the first prayer, approach; mothers, take charge of the children; let no one be against another, no one in hypocrisy; let us stand upright before the Lord with fear and trembling, to offer. When these things are done, let the deacons bring the gifts to the bishop at the altar, and let the presbyters stand at his right and at his left, as disciples standing by their master. And let two deacons on each side of the altar hold a fan of thin membranes, or of peacock feathers, or of linen, and gently wave away the small flying creatures, so that they do not fall into the cups. Then let the high priest, having prayed by himself together with the priests, and having put on a splendid vestment, and standing at the altar, making the trophy of the cross on his forehead with his hand, say: The grace of almighty God and the love of our Lord Jesus Christ and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And let all say together: And with your spirit. And the high priest: Lift up your minds. And all: We have them toward the Lord. And the high priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord. And all: It is worthy and just. And let the high priest say: It is truly worthy and just before all things to praise you, the truly existing God, who exists before all created things, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, the only unbegotten and without beginning and without king and without master, who is in need of nothing, the giver of every good, who is greater than all cause and generation, who is always the same and in the same way; from whom all things, as from some starting-point, into being

καὶ τὰς γυναῖκας, ὅπως μὴ θόρυβός τις γένηται καὶ μή τις νεύσῃ ἢ ψιθυρίσῃ ἢ νυστάξῃ. Oἱ δὲ ὑποδιάκονοι ἱστά σθωσαν εἰς τὰς τῶν ἀνδρῶν θύρας καὶ αἱ διάκονοι εἰς τὰς τῶν γυναικῶν, ὅπως μή τις ἐξέλθοι μήτε ἀνοιχθείη ἡ θύρα, κἂν πιστός τις ᾖ, κατὰ τὸν καιρὸν τῆς ἀναφορᾶς. Eἷς δὲ ὑποδιάκονος διδότω ἀπόρρυψιν χειρῶν τοῖς ἱερεῦσιν, σύμβολον καθαρότητος ψυχῶν Θεῷ ἀνακειμένων. Ὣν γενομένων οἱ διάκονοι προσαγέτωσαν τὰ δῶρα τῷ ἐπισκόπῳ πρὸς τὸ θυσιαστήριον, καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι ἐκ δεξιῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐξ εὐωνύμων στηκέτωσαν, ὡς ἂν μαθηταὶ παρεστῶ τες διδασκάλῳ· δύο δὲ διάκονοι ἐξ ἑκατέρων τῶν μερῶν τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου κατεχέτωσαν ἐξ ὑμένων λεπτῶν ·ιπίδιον ἢ πτερὸν ταῶνος ἢ ὀθόνης, καὶ ἠρέμα ἀποσοβείτωσαν τὰ μικρὰ τῶν ἱπταμένων ζóων, ὅπως ἂν μὴ ἐγχρίμπτωνται εἰς τὰ κύπελλα. Eὐξάμενος οὖν καθ' ἑαυτὸν ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς ἅμα τοῖς ἱερεῦσιν καὶ λαμπρὰν ἐσθῆτα μετενδὺς καὶ στὰς πρὸς τῷ θυσιαστηρίῳ, τὸ τρόπαιον τοῦ σταυροῦ κατὰ τοῦ μετώπου τῇ χειρὶ ποιησάμενος εἰπάτω· Ἡ χάρις τοῦ παντοκράτορος Θεοῦ καὶ ἡ ἀγάπη τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ ἡ κοινωνία τοῦ ἁγίου Πνεύματος ἔστω μετὰ πάντων ὑμῶν. Καὶ πάντες συμφώνως λεγέτωσαν, ὅτι· Καὶ μετὰ τοῦ πνεύματός σου. Καὶ ὁ ἀρχιερεύς· Ἄνω τὸν νοῦν. Καὶ πάντες· Ἔχομεν πρὸς τὸν Κύριον. Καὶ ὁ ἀρχιερεύς· Eὐχαριστήσωμεν τῷ Κυρίῳ. Καὶ πάντες· Ἄξιον καὶ δίκαιον.
