as you see, He has granted me. Behold the distinction! I am a man by nature, but a god by grace. See what grace I speak of: union with Him both sensibly and intellectually, both essentially and spiritually! But I have spoken to you of the intellectual union in different and various ways; but the sensible union I call that of the mysteries. For having been cleansed by repentance and by the streams of tears, partaking of the deified (252) body as of God, I too become a god by the ineffable union. See the mystery! The soul, therefore, and the body, that I may say these things again out of great joy, are one in two substances; these one in two, therefore, having partaken of Christ and having drunk of the blood, are likewise united in both substances and natures to my God, and become god by participation, and are called by the same name as Him in whom they have essentially participated. Therefore, the coal is called fire, and the black iron, having been heated, is seen as fire. If therefore it is seen as such, it would also be called such; it is seen as fire, it would be called fire. If you have not known yourself as such, do not disbelieve those who speak to you about such things,

ὡς ὁρᾷς, παρέσχε μοι. Βλέπε τήν διαίρεσιν! Ἄνθρωπός εἰμι τῇ φύσει, Θεός δέ τῇ χάριτι. Ὅρα ποίαν χάριν λέγω ἕνωσιν τήν μετ᾿ ἐκείνου αἰσθητῶς καί νοερῶς τε, οὐσιωδῶς καί πνευματικῶς τε! Ἀλλά τήν μέν νοεράν ἐξεῖπον ἕνωσίν σοι διαφόρως καί ποικίλως, αἰσθητήν δέ τήν τῶν μυστηρίων λέγω. Καθαρθείς γάρ μετανοίᾳ καί τοῖς τῶν δακρύων ῥείθροις, σώματος τεθεωμένου (252) ὡς Θεοῦ μεταλαμβάνων Θεός κἀγώ γίνομαι τῇ ἑνώσει τῇ ἀφράστῳ. Ὅρα τό μυστήριον! Ἡ ψυχή οὖν καί τό σῶμα, ἵνα ταῦτα πάλιν εἴπω ἐκ πολλῆς περιχαρείας, ἕν ἐν οὐσίαις ταῖς δυσί˙ ταῦτα οὖν τά ἕν δύο τοῦ Χριστοῦ μεταλαβόντα καί τοῦ αἵματος πιόντα ἀμφοτέραις ταῖς οὐσίαις καί ταῖς φύσεσιν ὡσαύτως ἑνωθέντα τοῦ Θεοῦ μου γίνονται Θεός μεθέξει, ὁμωνύμως τε καλοῦνται τῷ ὀνόματι ἐκείνου, οὗ οὐσιωδῶς μετέσχον. Λέγεται οὖν πῦρ ὁ ἄνθραξ καί ὁ σίδηρος ὁ μέλας πυρωθείς ὡς πῦρ ὁρᾶται. Εἰ τοιοῦτος οὖν ὁρᾶται, καί τοιοῦτος ἄν κληθείη˙ πῦρ ὁρᾶται, πῦρ κληθείη. Εἰ μή σεαυτόν τοιοῦτον ἔγνως, τοῖς περί τοιούτων μή ἀπίστει λέγουσί σοι,
