fearing, they associated with you, but the daughter of Judah did not endure your lawlessness.” 5.207 The things in Hosea concerning the licentious as being Canaanites also agree, as follows: “Ephraim is a partaker of idols; he has set for himself a stumbling block. They chose Canaanites; committing fornication, they have utterly committed fornication.” 5.208 And since the licentious person is tropologically a Canaanite, he is cast out of the holy house of the Lord Almighty, so that he may no longer be in it. Fulfilling this, the divine apostle Paul writes to the Church of the Corinthians: “Fornication is heard of among you, and such fornication as is not even among the Gentiles, that someone has his father’s wife. And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, so that he who has done this deed might be removed from you.” 5.209 And indeed he has been cast out of the assembly of the faithful, so that, having perceived into what evil he has come by his own choice, he might receive the wage of his fault, which also happened, so as to ... toward him when he repented exceedingly. For thus he who cast off the fornicating way was brought into the house of God, the Church. 5.210 And that, with nothing being evil by nature, as some of the heterodox think, a change of choice occurs, is demonstrated from the Gospel, from the Canaanite woman changing from a dog into a woman, being named daughter by the one who saved her, who said these things: “Daughter, your faith has saved you.” 5.211 For perhaps for this reason she was a dog before faith, because she was a licentious woman; for ... toward mating and shamefully passionate in flattery ... the dog; at any rate, it is forbidden along with a prostitute’s hire, the law saying: “You shall not bring the price of a dog or the hire of a prostitute into the house of the Lord your God.” For if this is observed, there is no Canaanite in the house of the Lord Almighty in the day that is illumined by the sun of righteousness, the true light, the Only-Begotten Son of God. 5.212 As the prophet Zechariah set forth for clarification has reached its end, we too cease from the composition of the commentaries on him.
