from its foundations, by the grace of God the Almighty, the doctrine of Christ was built up, shining forth to the glory of the God of all; it received greater boldness than before, while the impiety of the enemies of godliness was filled with the utmost shame and dishonor. 9.11.2 For first Maximinus himself, having been proclaimed a common enemy of all by the rulers, a most impious, most ill-omened and most God-hated tyrant, was publicly posted by proclamations; and whatever paintings had been set up in every city in honor of him and his children, some were thrown down from on high to the ground and shattered, and others had their faces disfigured, being blackened with dark paint; and likewise as many statues as had been erected in his honor, were similarly thrown down and shattered, exposed as a laughing-stock and a plaything to those who wished to insult and mock them. 9.11.3 Then also all the honors of the other enemies of godliness were taken away, and all who sided with Maximinus were executed, especially those who, having been honored by him with high offices, through their flattery of him had insolently outraged our faith; 9.11.4 such was Peucetius, who was to him the most honored and reverenced of all and his most loyal companion, having been appointed by him twice consul and thrice consul and prefect of the finances; and Culcianus likewise, who had passed through every office of authority, who had himself become renowned for the countless blood of Christians throughout Egypt; and not a few others besides these, through whom especially the tyranny of Maximinus was both strengthened and increased. 9.11.5 And so justice summoned Theotecnus too, by no means consigning to oblivion the things done by him against the Christians. For after having seemed to prosper on account of the idol set up by him in Antioch, he had already even been deemed worthy of a governorship by Maximinus, 9.11.6 but Licinius, on entering the city of the Antiochians, and having made a search for impostors, tortured the prophets and priests of the newly-made idol, inquiring by what means they practiced their deception. And when, being constrained by the tortures, it was impossible for them to conceal it, they revealed that the whole mystery was a deception devised by the art of Theotecnus. After inflicting just punishment on them all, he delivers over to death first Theotecnus himself, and then his accomplices in the imposture, after the very greatest tortures. 9.11.7 To all these were added also the children of Maximinus, whom he had already made partners in the imperial honor and in the dedication of tablets and paintings. And those who formerly boasted of their relationship to the tyrant and were puffed up to oppress all men suffered the same things as those mentioned before, with the utmost dishonor, since they did not accept discipline, nor know nor understand the exhortation which says in the sacred words: 9.11.8 Put not your trust in princes, in sons of men, in whom there is no salvation. His spirit shall go forth, and he shall return to his earth; in that day all his thoughts shall perish.
