happened to be at a certain spring for the sake of refreshment; at which he also promised with an oath to repay them. Whence also these men came to him as he was reigning, saying that if he would remove the icon of God and of all the saints, his scepter would endure for a generation for 100 years. He contrived so much against the icons that he even drove the great Germanus from his throne after he had argued at length. But the patriarch put forward the Lord's image sent through Thaddeus to Abgar and deposited in Edessa. And he brought forward also the icon painted by Luke the apostle and sent to Theophilus in Rome, and likewise the two bronze images which the woman with the issue of blood had erected out of desire, one of which was inclined towards the ground in her likeness and receiving the blessing from the other; for it was Christ's. 522 At that time also Gregory the Pope of Rome writes to the Emperor Leo concerning the icons. But not being able to wash the Ethiopian, he forbade the taxes of Italy and Rome to be paid to the emperor, and he caused their whole country to revolt from this authority. And this is an example of Leo’s evildoing, in addition to the others. Near the precinct of the Holy Wisdom of God a splendid house had been built, in which were treasured books, numbering about thirty-six thousand five hundred, having both a guard and a president, an honorable and wise man. And under him there were other admirable men, about 12, who educated those who wished without pay; and they were so renowned for their virtue that the emperors did nothing without them. The most wicked one, therefore, communicates to these men also the things of his godless opinion, and not being able to find them compliant, he piles up flammable material around the divine temple, and ignites a strong fire, and burns everything together, both those divine men and with them the books. And at that time there was also a certain rich man who lived with almsgiving and fornication together, and having grown old in this way, he died. 523 A dispute therefore arose about where such a man was placed; for some said that almsgiving must be blameless, but others insisted that sins are cleansed by it. Therefore, when both the Patriarch Romanus and the God-loving bishops besought God concerning this, it was revealed to a certain recluse. For he saw paradise on the one side, and on the other a great flame of fire, and in the middle the deceased standing and groaning greatly; to whom an angel came and said, "Why do you groan so greatly? Your almsgiving has delivered you from the flame." We learn therefore from this that silver given from a defiled hand will not benefit so much. But also Zeno the emperor, as someone says, had relations with a virgin woman, whose mother, not bearing what had happened, earnestly besought the ever-virgin Theotokos to obtain vengeance. And she heard from there a divine voice saying thus to her: "We wish to avenge you, O woman; but his right hand does not permit me to do so." But Gregory the Theologian, legislating with precision, is found to have said thus: "A pure man does not partake of the hire of a prostitute." And something of this sort also happened in Rome. A certain monk, having been excommunicated by Pope Gregory for doing something against the will of 524 his abbot and against the rule of the monastery of the same Gregory, died after a few days. When the Pope heard this, he was greatly grieved, because the brother had departed suddenly while being bound. And writing on a paper a prayer loosing the dead man from his bonds, he gave it to a certain deacon, saying, "Go to the brother's tomb, and read it." And when this was done, the abbot sees the brother in a dream, and says to him, "We have grief, brother, concerning you, because you died while bound; tell us, then, how things are with you?" And he, answering, said, "Truly, father, I was in prison until yesterday; but today I have been released." And it was known to all that on the very
