of yours, that it is not yet at its end; it is necessary to persevere until the end, so that you may thus be crowned. Bear nobly the things of exile, be ready even to die for the holy icon of Christ; keep yourself from licentiousness, be vigilant against the unseen enemies. Rejoice in hope, endure in affliction, be sober in your prayers, praying also for me, the sinner, that I may be saved with you. The brothers with me, your brothers, greet you; the Lord be with you. 249 {1To my child Ammonas}1 Brother Ammonas, rejoice in the Lord; I greet you from the lips of my heart, crowning you with praises, for having contended well, for having been scourged for Christ and for having borne so many blows with good courage. Would that I had kissed your flesh that was torn for Christ, would that I, the humble one, had been deemed worthy to share also in your sufferings; nevertheless, in spirit I have shared them and I rejoice, that I, the sinner, possess such a child, whose blood with that of your fellow-contestant brothers is for a testimony of truth to the church of God, whose exile is for the ostracism of impiety. In a single moment you have been wounded, and you see with what encomia you are praised; what then at the tribunal of all, when the blessed of his Father will be received by him into the kingdom of heaven? Therefore, take courage, stand firm; for the contest is still on, the race is still on. Do not give up as if you have already finished the race; if need be, let us even be slaughtered for the holy icon of Christ. Yes, my child, I beseech you, let us not neglect our ascetic practice, our exile; for not only he who begins is praiseworthy, but he who completes the work of God. We have every day the spiritual enemies wounding us with arrows of thoughts; watch for them, be armored with faith, with love, with hope. I hear that you are strict about your sitting without licentiousness and I rejoice; for licentiousness is the mother of all evils. May God, child, yet make you braver, strengthen you, prepare you for every good work. Pray also for me, the sinner, that I may be saved. If my brother and child in the flesh and in the spirit is with you, I greet him. Your brothers with me greet you; grace be with you. Amen. 250 {1To my child Symeon}1 Rejoice, my child Symeon, who has been called by grace to the confession of Christ; see how Christ was not ashamed of you according to your former way of life, but being well-pleased was well-pleased that you be scourged for him, be mocked, be imprisoned, and then also be exiled with your like-minded brothers. What will you give back to the Lord? What might you offer worthily? What else but to keep for yourself the grace inalienable through long-suffering and perfect faith? Wherefore, be vigilant, be sober against the wiles of the devil, lest he slip in somewhere, lest he trip you up somewhere. Flee from the sight of women; sit and be not moved. I say this because I have heard that for the sake of healing you are leaving your cell; this is not such a time, my child, but one of martyrdom. Do you wish to heal? Heal those who are sick in soul through the word; and if also in body, if it is easy for you while sitting still and not moving from place to place, and this in the case of pious men, but certainly not of women. Loving you I remind you. Let your care and meditation always be in the law of the Most High with handiwork; for idleness is the mother of sin. Expect again blows for Christ, perhaps even a glorious death, if indeed he should deem you so worthy. Pray also for me, the sinner, that I may be saved in all things. The brothers with me greet you. May the Lord keep you unharmed in all things; grace be with you. Amen. 251 {1To Theophylactus the presbyter}1 From what your honor wrote, it revealed its own virtue both through the humble speech in the superscription and through the power borne in the letters; for your being present with the martyrs, being zealous with them and contending with them, and your burying the holy Thaddaeus with your own hands, has the greatest possible proof of your piety, O holy man. But I grieve in you on account of the written declaration of impiety. But do not be grieved; already
