it is ordered that sins should subsist, and when these are destroyed and have vanished, it also departs with them. but if those who serve wrath appear, being called vessels of wrath, addressed by the same name as it, anger and wrath, you will examine better. 851 Ps 84,5-7 Since you are the God of the salvation which you give to us, turn us, providing us with occasions for repentance and receiving us as we return to you. For it will follow that your anger will also be turned away from us. For since we kindled it through the ways we have sinned, when we have repented and turned back, it will no longer be active against us, being made to disappear. For just as fire, when the combustible material by which it is active fails, is no more, so when our sins have vanished, your anger will no longer subsist against us. God gives life, providing life to those, who were turning back to him, having fallen away from him and turned away from him; or he himself, having turned his face which he had turned away from them on account of the evil they were doing. For it is possible to understand "Having turned" in either way, as it is said indefinitely. For it does not indicate whether he turned to them or they turned to him. Life having been given to those made alive, the people of God rejoiced in God himself who had given life. 852 Ps 84,8 Since they demand salvation not from works but by the grace and mercy of God, they say, O Lord, show us by what means you have mercy on and pity your people; for thus also your salvation, that is, the salvation from you, might be given to us. It is possible to call mercy and salvation Jesus, the cause of mercy and salvation. For he himself is the mercy and the salvation of God inasmuch as he has mercy and saves. 853 Ps 84,9 God speaks not by striking the hearing of the listeners from without, but by depositing in the mind itself what he wishes to declare to the intellect without utterance, whence it is said, "I will hear what he will speak in me." The saying of Habakkuk also agrees with this, which has it thus: "And I will watch to see what the Lord God will speak in me." According to these things Paul also says, "If you seek proof of Christ speaking in me;" for Christ spoke in him, and not simply to him. for he speaks in the one to whom he speaks, but one does not in every case also speak in him to whom he speaks, when only the hearing is struck from without. But interpreting what the Lord God will speak in him, he said it is peace upon the people of God himself, all the enemies against the people being clearly overthrown, or the people having the peace which surpasses all understanding, by which they would be free from all disturbance and tumult, their thoughts keeping calm. this peace is given from God the Father and the Lord Jesus along with grace, as the Savior said concerning it, "My peace I give to you." but this peace is given also to those who render to God the things of God, keeping justice towards him, who are properly called his holy ones. and he gives it to those who through repentance turn their heart to him, making their return to him not crooked nor feigned, but from the very depth of the mind. 854 Ps 84,10 Then indeed glory also dwelt in the land, the Savior wondrously accomplishing many and great things: raisings of the dead, givings of sight to the blind, cleansings of lepers, and as many other things as he did marvelously. But as for a more mystical interpretation, for those who fear God, being without want (for there is no want for those who fear him), the salvation of God has drawn near, being partaken of by them through the salvific things they do. For just as salvation is far from sinners who work the things of destruction, so, on the contrary, the salvation of God is near to those who fear him. Therefore he also makes glory to dwell in the land of those who say these things. and you will say their land is their good heart, which bore fruit a hundredfold from the seed cast upon it. But that the glory of God dwells in the heart, is shown by the passage that says, "The God who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of
