of the victory of Constantine and of those with him for those who were under the dominion of the Romans. 10.1.1 Thanks be to God, the almighty and king of all, for all things, and greatest thanks also to the savior and redeemer of our souls, Jesus Christ, through whom we pray always that the blessings of peace may be preserved for us firm and unshaken from external troubles and from those in the mind. 10.1.2 And together with prayers, having in this added the tenth book to the preceding parts of the Ecclesiastical History, we shall inscribe it to you, my most holy Paulinus, proclaiming you as the seal of the whole work. 10.1.3 And appropriately, in a perfect number, we shall here set down the perfect and festive discourse on the renewal of the churches, obeying the divine Spirit which commands us thus: Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have brought him salvation; the Lord has made known his salvation, in the sight of the nations he has revealed his righteousness. 10.1.4 And indeed, in accordance with the oracle that commands the new song, let us now fittingly proclaim through this that after those terrible and dark sights and narratives we have been deemed worthy now to see such things and to celebrate such things as many of the righteous indeed and martyrs of God before us desired to see on earth, and did not see, and to hear, and did not hear. 10.1.5 But they, having hastened with all speed, obtained things far better, being snatched away to the very heavens and to the paradise of divine delight; while we, confessing that these present things are greater than we deserve, are utterly astonished at the grace of the bounteous Giver, and we marvel rightly, adoring him with all the power of our soul and bearing witness to the truth of the written prophecies, 10.1.6 in which it is said: Come and see the works of the Lord, what wonders he has set on the earth, putting an end to wars to the ends of the earth; he will break the bow and shatter the weapon, and burn the shields in fire. Rejoicing that these things have been clearly fulfilled for us, let us continue with the narrative that follows. 10.1.7 The whole race of the God-haters had indeed vanished in the manner described, and was so suddenly wiped from human sight, that again a divine saying was fulfilled which says: I saw the wicked highly exalted and lifting himself up like the cedars of Lebanon; and I passed by, and behold, he was not, and I sought his place, and it was not found. 10.1.8 But from then on a bright and radiant day, which no cloud overshadowed, shone down upon the churches of Christ throughout the whole world with rays of heavenly light, nor was there any envy for those outside our company to share in, if not equal blessings, yet at least an effluence and participation of the things granted to us by God. 10.2.1 For all men, then, there was freedom from the oppression of the tyrants, and being delivered from former evils, one in one way and another in another acknowledged the only true God as the champion of the pious. But especially for us who had fixed our hopes on the Christ of God, there was unspeakable gladness, and a certain divine joy blossomed for all, as we beheld every place which a little while before had been ruined by the impieties of the tyrants reviving as if from a long and deadly pestilence, and temples rising again from their foundations to an immense height and receiving a splendor far greater than that of the ones formerly destroyed. 10.2.2 But the supreme emperors also, by successive enactments in favor of the Christians, confirmed for us still further and more extensively the bounties of God's magnificent gift, and imperial letters came personally to the bishops, with honors and grants of money. It would not be out of place, at the proper point in our narrative, to inscribe in this book, as on a sacred monument, their texts translated from the Roman to the Greek tongue, so that they might also be held in memory by all who come after us. 10.3.1 After these things, then, the spectacle prayed for and longed for by us all was put together,
