to him who says: "I learned without guile, and I impart without grudging," wherefore I cry out thus to all, as it has been said: "Come learn that not in the future only, but already lies before your eyes and hands and feet the ineffable treasure which is above every rule and authority. Come be assured that the light of the world is this treasure of which I speak to you."

And I do not speak this of myself, but the Treasure Himself said and says: "I am the resurrection and the life, I am the grain of mustard seed hidden in the earth, I am the pearl that is bought, (433) by the faithful, I am the kingdom of heaven hidden in your midst, and as I am seen by those who have sought and found me now, so will I shine both in them and upon them all, as I now am, shining, though hidden, above all the heavens. I, who am here, who am by nature uncontainable, become by grace containable in you, and the invisible becomes visible, not showing myself as I am, even if I remain wholly seen, but as much as the nature and power of those who see me can receive. I am the leaven which a soul takes and places in its tripartite self, and it is leavened and becomes wholly like me; for as the leaven is, so also becomes the flour that is mixed with it, with the water and the salt; for with me, he says, the Son, is my co-essential Father and His Paraclete, and they naturally become instead of water and salt. I am the one who has become for my servants an intelligible paradise in place of the sensible one, in which I place all who believe in me and are reborn through the Spirit, who can no longer sin, nor does the ruler of the world have any power against them; I am in them and they in me, and they conquer the world, because they are outside of the world and have with them me, who am stronger than all. I am the light-like fount of the immortal stream and river, in which not after death, but hourly, those who love me with all their soul are washed (434) in the water flowing from me, and are cleansed of all filth, body and soul, and they all shine forth, like a torch and as the form of a sunbeam. I am the one who rises hourly in these as in the morning, a sun seen with the mind, just as I formerly revealed myself to the prophets, and they, seeing me, sang hymns, ever calling upon me: ‘In the morning,’ says David, ‘hear me, in the morning I will stand before you and you will see me,’ and another: ‘Then shall your light break forth as the morning, and your healing shall spring forth speedily,’ which is to say, when you keep my commandments."

And why am I compelled to say all these things to your love, all that God, thirsting for our salvation, utters to us, if not entirely that by learning through all these things you might be persuaded that those who sit in darkness ought to see the great light shining, if they look at all, and that none of you may think that it has shone, but it is impossible for men who are still in the body to behold it. For if it were not possible, why did it shine and why does it shine, if not beheld by them? Rather, the light always was and always shone and shines in those who are purified, and it shone in the darkness and the darkness did not comprehend it, and now it shines and the darkness does not comprehend it, that is, does not grasp it. But to say ‘now,’ that it has risen for the people sitting in darkness, means that it has just been pleased to be revealed to those to whom it also manifests itself; for the others, being in darkness, do not comprehend it. (435) For the invisible One was seen, through the body by the physical eyes of all who beheld him, unbelievers and believers alike, but the light of his Godhead was known and revealed only to those who were faithful through works, who also said to him: ‘Behold, we, Lord, have left everything and have followed you’;

λέγοντι· "Ἀδόλως τε ἔμαθον, ἀφθόνως τε μεταδίδωμι", διό δή τοῦτο οὕτω βοῶ τοῖς πᾶσιν, ὡς εἴρηται· "∆εῦτε μάθετε ὅτι οὐκ ἐν τῷ μέλλοντι μόνον, ἀλλ᾿ ἤδη που πρόκειται πρό τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν καί χειρῶν καί ποδῶν ὑμῶν ὁ ὑπεράνω πάσης ἀρχῆς καί ἐξουσίας ἀνεκλάλητος θησαυρός. ∆εῦτε πιστώθητε ὅτι τό φῶς τοῦ κόσμου ὁ θησαυρός οὗτος, ὅν ὑμῖν λέγω, ἐστί".

Καί οὐκ ἐγώ ἀπ᾿ ἐμαυτοῦ τοῦτο λαλῶ, ἀλλ᾿ αὐτός εἶπε καί λέγει ὁ θησαυρός· "Ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ ἀνάστασις καί ἡ ζωή, ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ κόκκος τοῦ σινάπεως ὁ κατακρυπτόμενος ἐν τῇ γῇ, ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ μαργαρίτης ὁ ὠνούμενος, (433) ὑπό τῶν πιστῶν, ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν ἡ ἐν μέσῳ ὑμῶν κρυπτομένη, καί καθώς ὁρῶμαι ὑπό τῶν ζητησάντων καί εὑρόντων με νῦν, οὕτω λάμψω καί ἐν αὐτοῖς καί ἐπάνω πάντων αὐτῶν, ὡς νῦν εἰμι λάμπων ἀποκεκρυμμένος ὤν ὑπεράνω πάντων τῶν οὐρανῶν. Ἐγώ καί ἐνταῦθα, ὁ ἀχώρητος κατά φύσιν, ἐν ὑμῖν κατά χάριν γίνομαι χωρητός καί ὁ ἀόρατος ὁρατός, οὐχ ὅσος εἰμί δεικνύμενος, εἰ καί ὅλος μένω ὁρώμενος, ἀλλ᾿ ὅσον ἡ τῶν ὁρώντων με φύσις καί δύναμις ἐπιδέχεται. Ἐγώ εἰ μι ἡ ζύμη, ἥν λαβοῦσα ψυχή καί βάλουσα ἐν τῷ τριμερεῖ αὐτῆς, ἀναζυμοῦται καί ὅλῃ ἐμοί ὁμοία καθίσταται· οἵα γάρ ἡ ζύμη, τοιοῦτος γίνεται καί ὁ ταύτῃ ἀναφυρόμενος σύν τῷ ὕδατι καί τῷ ἅλατι ἄλευρος· σύν ἐμοί γάρ, φησί, τῷ Υἱῷ ὑπάρχων ὁ ὁμοφυής μου Πατήρ καί ὁ τούτου Παράκλητος, αὐτοί ἀντί ὕδατος καί ἁλός πεφύκασι γίνεσθαι. Ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ἀντί τοῦ αἰσθητοῦ παραδείσου νοητός τοῖς ἐμοῖς δούλοις παράδεισος γεγονώς, ἐν ᾧ τιθῶ πάντας τούς πιστεύοντας εἰς ἐμέ καί ἀναγεννωμένους διά τοῦ Πνεύματος, οἵ οὐκέτι δύνανται ἁμαρτάνειν, οὐδέ ὁ τοῦ κόσμου ἄρχων ἰσχύει τι κατ᾿ αὐτῶν· ἐγώ εἰμι ἐν αὐτοῖς καί αὐτοί ἐν ἐμοί καί νικῶσι τόν κόσμον, διά τό εἶναι αὐτούς ἔξω τοῦ κόσμου καί τόν ἰσχυρότερον πάντων ἐμέ μεθ᾿ ἑαυτῶν ἔχειν. Ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ φωτοειδής πηγή τοῦ ἀθανάτου ῥείθρου καί ποταμοῦ, ἐν ᾗ οὐ μετά θάνατον, ἀλλά καθ᾿ ὥραν οἱ ἐμέ φιλοῦντες ἀπό ψυχῆς λούονται (434) τῷ ἀπορρέοντι ὕδατι ἐξ ἐμοῦ καί παντός ῥύπου καθαίρονται τό σῶμα καί τήν ψυχήν καί ἀπαστράπτουσιν ὅλοι, ὥσπερ λαμπάς καί ὡς εἶδος ἀκτῖνος ἡλιακῆς. Ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ἀντανίσχων καθ᾿ ὥραν ἐν τούτοις ὡς ἐν πρωΐ καί ὁρώμενος ἥλιος νοερῶς, καθώς καί πρῴην ἐν τοῖς προφήταις ἐνεφάνιζον ἐμαυτόν καί αὐτοί ὁρῶντες ἀνύμνουν, ἐπικαλούμενοί με ἀεί· "Τό πρωΐ γάρ, φησίν ὁ ∆αυίδ, εἰσάκουσόν μου, τό πρωΐ παραστήσομαί σοι καί ἐπόψει με", καί ἕτερος· "Τότε ῥαγήσεται πρώϊμον τό φῶς σου καί τά ἰάματά σου ταχύ ἀνατελεῖ", ὅτε δηλονότι καί σύ τάς ἐντολάς μου τηρήσεις".

Καί τί πάντα λέγειν πρός τήν ὑμετέραν ἀγάπην οὕτω καταναγκάζομαι, ὅσα ὁ Θεός διψῶν τήν σωτηρίαν ἡμῶν πρός ἡμᾶς φθέγγεται, ἀλλ᾿ ἤ πάντως, ἵνα διά πάντων μαθόντες πεισθήσησθε ὅτι οἱ καθήμενοι ἐν σκότει τό μέγα φῶς λάμπον βλέπειν ὀφείλουσιν, εἴπερ ὅλως ἐμβλέπουσι, καί ἵνα μή τινες ἐξ ὑμῶν λογίζωνται ὅτι ἔλαμψε μέν, ἀδύνατον δέ τούς ἔτι ὄντας ἀνθρώπους ἐν σώματι καθορᾶν αὐτό. Εἰ γάρ μή ἦν δυνατόν, τί καί ἔλαμψε καί λάμπει μή καθορώμενον ὑπ᾿ αὐτῶν; Μᾶλλον δέ τό μέν φῶς ἀεί ἦν καί ἀεί ἔλαμπε καί λάμπει ἐν τοῖς κεκαθαρμένοις, καί ἐν τῷ σκότει ἔφαινε καί ἡ σκοτία αὐτό οὐ κατέλαβε, καί νῦν λάμπει καί ἡ σκοτία αὐτό οὐ καταλαμβάνει εἴτ᾿ οὖν οὐχ ἅπτεται αὐτοῦ. Τό δέ ῾νῦν᾿ εἰπεῖν, ὅτι ἀνέτειλε τῷ ἐν σκότει καθημένῳ λαῷ, τό ἄρτι εὐδοκῆσαι ἀποκαλυφθῆναί ἐστιν εἰς οὕς καί ἐμφανίζεται· οἱ γάρ ἄλλοι ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ ὄντες οὐ καταλαμβάνουσιν αὐτό. (435) Ὁ γάρ ἀόρατος ὤφθη, τό μέν διά τοῦ σώματος τοῖς αἰσθητοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς πᾶσι τοῖς θεασαμένοις αὐτόν ἀπίστοις τε καί πιστοῖς, ἐγνώσθη δέ καί τό φῶς αὐτοῦ τῆς Θεότητος ἀπεκαλύφθη μόνοις ἐκείνοις τοῖς διά τῶν ἔργων πιστοῖς, οἵτινες καί ἔλεγον πρός αὐτόν· "Ἰδού ἡμεῖς, Κύριε, ἀφήκαμεν πάντα καί ἠκολουθήσαμέν σοι"·
