of the Jews, saying, because of the calf-making they wrought: Let me alone, and being angered with wrath I will destroy them; but concerning the calling of the Gentiles adding, As I live, and my name lives, for all the earth shall be filled with my glory. And in Isaiah the seraphim, encircling the Lord Sabaoth, cried out: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Sabaoth, all the earth is full of his glory. 23.517 In harmony with these things it has been said also in the 71st psalm, which clearly proclaims the things concerning Christ: Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, and blessed be the name of his glory, and all the earth shall be filled with his glory. These things, therefore, the present prophecy also seals, saying: Be exalted above the heavens, O God, and your glory over all the earth. FOR THE END, DO NOT DESTROY, OF DAVID, FOR AN INSCRIPTION ON A PILLAR. 57. If indeed you speak righteousness, judge uprightly, O sons of men. The present discourse also exhorts, "For the end, not to destroy," but for each to keep his own end. Both, moreover, the one at hand and the one before it, have the same inscription, likewise containing, "For the end, do not destroy, of David," and "for an inscription on a pillar." The time, however, although not in the present one, has been made clear in the one before this, according to the addition in which it says, "When he fled from the face of Saul into the cave." Therefore, that the one set before us was also spoken at the same time, seems to me not only from what has been said, but also from what follows. For since the inscription before this one said about the sons of men, "Sons of men, whose teeth are weapons and arrows"; it is fitting that the one at hand also addresses the same sons of men right at the beginning, saying: "If indeed you speak righteousness, judge uprightly, O sons of men." And since in the one before this it was said: "He has delivered my soul from the midst of lion cubs," or, "from the midst of lions," according to the others, it is fitting that in the one at hand it adds, "The Lord has broken the molars of the lions." For we needed to learn how He delivered the soul of David from the midst of lion cubs. And again, concerning the teeth of those who slandered him, in the one before this, it was said, "Sons of men, whose teeth are weapons and arrows," but in the one at hand: "God will break their teeth in their mouth." From which things is shown the harmony in both inscriptions. And one might also say otherwise, since the one before this contains the calling of the nations, it is fitting that the present inscription is joined to such a prophecy, proclaiming to the sons of men the word concerning the just judgment of God, and enjoining all the peoples to approach the teaching of the word with true purpose and a pure conscience, and not to feign piety. Therefore to all the peoples named above and to all the nations, concerning whom it was said, "I will confess to you among the peoples, O Lord; I will sing praise to you among the nations," the present word makes its address, testifying and saying: "If indeed you speak righteousness, judge uprightly, O sons of men." For if someone should truly profess righteousness, it will be shown from nowhere else than from judging uprightly. And he judges uprightly who has decided for himself the course according to right reason, and to do nothing crooked or perverse. Then, as the sons of men speak right things with their lips, and profess righteousness with their mouth, but are convicted by their works, that they devise the opposite things in their mind, 23.520 he adds: For even in
