festivals of dedication in every city and consecrations of the newly built oratories, assemblies of bishops in the same place, the coming together of those from afar, from foreign lands, friendly greetings of peoples to peoples, the union of the members of Christ's body, coming together into one harmony. 10.3.2 Therefore, in accordance with a prophetic utterance mystically signifying what was to be, bone was brought to bone and joint to joint, and all that the divine Word had truthfully foretold in riddles. 10.3.3 And there was one power of the divine Spirit moving through all the members, and one soul of all, and the same eagerness of faith, and one hymn of praise to God from all. Yea, and of the leaders there were perfect rites and sacred services of the priests and divine ordinances of the church, here with the singing of psalms and the hearing of the other words delivered to us from God, there with the performance of divine and mystical ministrations, and there were the ineffable symbols of the Savior's passion. 10.3.4 And together every age group, of both male and female nature, with the whole power of their mind, through prayers and thanksgiving, with joyful mind and soul honored God, the author of all good things. And every one of the rulers present also composed panegyric orations, as each had the ability, celebrating the festival. 10.4.1 And one of moderate ability, having composed an oration, came forward into the midst, as in an assembly of the church, while many pastors were present and giving ear in quiet and order, addressed all things to one excellent and God-beloved bishop, through whose zeal the most distinguished temple in the country of Phoenicia, at Tyre, had been magnificently constructed, and delivered the following oration: A PANEGYRIC ON THE BUILDING OF THE CHURCHES, ADDRESSED TO PAULINUS, BISHOP OF THE TYRIANS 10.4.2 O friends of God and priests who are clothed with the holy long robe and the heavenly crown of glory and the divine unction and the priestly garment of the Holy Spirit, and you, O new pride of God's holy temple, honored by God with venerable wisdom, but having shown forth magnificent works and deeds of a new and flourishing virtue, to whom God himself, who encompasses the whole world, has granted the distinguished honor of building and renewing on earth this house for Christ his only-begotten and first-begotten Word, and for his holy and divine bride, 10.4.3 whether one would wish to call you a new Bezalel, the architect of a divine tabernacle, or a Solomon, king of a new and much greater Jerusalem, or even a new Zerubbabel, who bestowed upon the temple of God a glory much greater than the former, 10.4.4 and you also, O flock of Christ's sacred fold, home of good words, school of moderation, and reverent and God-beloved auditory of piety; 10.4.5 In former times, indeed, it was our custom, when we learned by hearing from the divine readings of the marvelous signs of God and the wonders of the Lord and his benefits to men, to send up hymns and songs to God, being taught to say: O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us, the work that thou didst in their days, in the days of old; 10.4.6 but now we no longer learn of the high arm and the heavenly right hand of our all-good and all-sovereign God by hearing or by words of report, but by deeds, so to speak, and with our own eyes we see that what was handed down of old by memory is faithful and true, so that we may sing a second hymn of victory and clearly exclaim and say: As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God. 10.4.7 And in what city but in this newly-built and God-made one? which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth, concerning which another divine oracle also thus proclaims good tidings: Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God. To which the all-good God having gathered us through the grace of his Only-begotten, let each of those who have been called sing praise, all but shouting
