years from Adam 5472. 373 After the capture of Alexandria the 188th Olympiad was held. Herod, having rebuilt the city of the Gabinians, once Samaria, named it Sebaste; and having made its seaport, Strato's Tower, a city, he called it Caesarea after the same man, raising a temple to Octavius in each. Later he also founded Antipatris in the plain of Lydda, named after his own father, and settled in it those who lived around Sebaste, from whom he had taken their land. He also founded other cities, and he was harsh to the Jews, but most gracious to the other nations. It was the 189th Olympiad, which six days before the Calends of March, the 24th according to the Antiochenes, was held, by which the year was established in its proper bounds. Africanus, having omitted to say how many years Hyrcanus ruled the Jews because the 34 years of Hyrcanus conflicted with his edition, in addition to this shortened the reign of Herod by 3 years, recording only 34 instead of 37 years; which, if we grant it to be true, Herod will be found dying in the first year of the incarnation of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ, which is absurd according to the evangelical traditions. From Eusebius of Pamphilus concerning Antigonus and the end of the kingdom of the Jews, and of the prophecy of the prophet Daniel concerning the 70 weeks and Herod the foreigner Antigonus, having risen up against the kingdom of the Jews and fought many battles, is put to death, and at this point the kingdom of the Jews comes to an end. Herod after this rules them, having received from the Romans the kingdom of the Jews which was not at all his by right. And here the Anointed Ruler prophesied by Daniel comes to an end. For until Herod there were anointed rulers; these were the 374 high priests, who presided over the nation of the Jews, beginning from the renewal of the temple under Darius in the sixty-fifth Olympiad, and ending with Hyrcanus in the 186th Olympiad. The years between these events are 483, as many as the prophecy of Daniel also decrees, saying: And you shall know and understand: from the going forth of the word to restore and to build Jerusalem until the Anointed Ruler shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks. And these 9 and 60 weeks complete a time of 483 years, which is the number of years of the rule of the anointed rulers. The last of these, Hyrcanus, having been taken captive by the Parthians, Herod the son of Antipater receives from Augustus and the Roman senate the kingdom of the Jews, which was not at all his by right, and then his children until the final siege of Jerusalem; no longer were those of the priestly line by succession consecrated to God, nor for life according to the law of Moses, but certain obscure men at different times, some for a year, others for a little longer, purchased the high priesthood from the Roman governors. Herod, son of Antipater the Ascalonite and of his mother Cypros the Arabian, is entrusted by the Romans with the kingdom of the Jews, which was not at all his by right, in whose time, as the birth of Christ was approaching, the succession from their forefathers, both the high priesthood and the rule of the Jews, was dissolved, fulfilling the prophecy in Moses which says: A ruler shall not fail from Judah, nor a leader from his loins, until he comes for whom it is reserved, and he is the expectation of nations. And next Daniel prophesies, saying: And after the seven and sixty-two weeks, anointing shall be destroyed, and there will be no judgment in it, and the people of a coming ruler will destroy the temple and the holy place, and they will be cut off in a flood of war. And next he says: and upon the temple shall be the abomination of desolations, and until the consummation of time an end shall be put to the desolation. 375 As is contained in an epitome in some Roman editions concerning the times from Alexander to Augustus, and also from the foundation of Rome and from the capture of Troy until the same Augustus Caesar And so there have passed from the death of Alexander son of Philip, which happened in the
