With the arrows being sent, do not spare to strike back at those who strike you and contrive these things against you, but while they wound you with despair, let them be wounded by the hope sent forth from you, and while they pummel you with anger and shove you with wrath, let their faces be slapped by your gentleness, let them be cast outside, far from your house. (303) For are you, as I said, an infant or a child, for does weakness of soul exist in you even now, for is your mind presently weak for resistance? You know both how to flee the enemies and how to conquer them again, for in warring you have me as a co-worker and protector, and in fleeing you have acquired me as a mighty, strong shelter. And what of the things on earth grieves you, which of these, tell me? Gold or silver or precious stones? And who is more brilliant than I, or who shines more, or what stone, like me, is priceless in every way? Does the loss of lands, or the lack of grain, or the failure of wine disturb you at all? And what other paradise is there like me, or land of things below and fleeting like the land of the meek? And what prepared bread or wine in the world is like my grace, like the Divine Spirit, like the bread of life, which I provide, my body and my blood, to those who with a pure heart and unwavering faith eat and drink me with fear and trembling, both spiritually and sensibly? What delight, what joy, what glory, tell me, is greater on earth, than to see me alone, to behold only me as in a mirror darkly, to see the radiance of my glory and it alone and through it to be taught these things and more than these with precision, that I am God, the creator of all things, to know and to understand that a man is reconciled to me while sitting in the lowest pit, and he converses directly as a friend to a friend (304) having surpassed the rank of a hireling and the fear of slavery, serving me without wearying, ministering with love, making himself intimate with me through obedience to the commandments. I do not speak of those who serve me as hirelings, nor again of those who approach me as slaves, but the deeds of my friends and intimates and sons. Which are these by nature, write briefly. To consider oneself the most worthless of all in the world, not only of fellow ascetics and worldly people, but truly worse even than the gentiles. to reckon as a fall from eternal life one small transgression of the least commandment. the small children as perfect men
