he has sold, therefore, being driven by some creditor. But it is not so. For he did not say “bought,” but “redeemed.” And similar to this, the same holy apostle says, “redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” And we do not buy days, nor do we give a price for days, but he said this signifying that through patience * and the delaying aspect of long-suffering. So “redeemed” disclosed the undertaking of his incarnate presence in the world for our sake, through which he who is impassible God undertook to suffer for us, remaining in the proper impassibility of his own divinity and * that which he undertook to suffer for us, not buying us from others, but undertaking the cause of the cross for us, by choice and not by compulsion. Hence Marcion’s argument has been refuted in every respect. And there are many things for the overthrow of his contrivance and drama, arising from pious reasoning and a well-reasoned emphasis in the refutation against him. 9. But I will come to the things written by him, or rather, falsified. For this man has only the Gospel according to Luke, mutilated from the beginning on account of the Savior’s conception and his incarnate presence. And not only did he cut off the beginning, 2.105 he who corrupted himself more than the Gospel, but he also cut out many of the words of truth from the end and the middle, and added other things contrary to what was written, and has used only this one text, the Gospel according to Luke. And he has with him ten epistles of the holy apostle, which are the only ones he uses, and not all the things written in them, but mutilating some of them, and altering certain chapters. He uses these two books; but he composed other writings of his own for those led astray by him. The epistles said to be with him are: first to the Galatians, second to the Corinthians, third the second to the Corinthians, fourth to the Romans, fifth to the Thessalonians, sixth the second to the Thessalonians, seventh to the Ephesians, eighth to the Colossians, ninth to Philemon, tenth to the Philippians; and he has parts of the one said to be to the Laodiceans. From this very text preserved by him, both of the Gospel and of the apostle’s epistles, we are able, with God, to show him a deceiver and one who is deluded and to refute him most thoroughly. For he will be overthrown, without a doubt, by the very things acknowledged by him. For from these same remnants of the Gospel and the epistles still found with him, it will be shown to the discerning that Christ is not alien to the Old Testament, and that the prophets, therefore, are not alien to the Lord’s sojourn, 2.106 and that the apostle preaches a resurrection of the flesh, and calls the prophets just, and that those with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob are among the saved, and all things that are of the holy church of God, both saving and holy and established by God in faith and in knowledge and in hope and in teaching. 10. I shall also set forth the treatise which I made against him before I was zealous to produce this present composition at the exhortation of you, the brethren. For some years, while investigating this Marcion’s contrived falsehood and nonsensical teaching, having taken into my hands these very books of the aforementioned which he † possesses, having culled and gathered in sequence from the aforementioned two books—what is called the Gospel by him and what is called the Apostolikon by him—the things able to refute him, I made a kind of floor-plan of a composition, arranging chapters in order and titling each saying ˉα ˉβ ˉγ. And so I went through to the end, in which he appears foolishly against himself, still these remaining things of both the Savior and
