he promised from his own house to give the soldiers all that the state 4.26.13 owed them. And they on the one hand praised his words and were full of anger against Areobindus, but in the meantime Areobindus with Artabanes and his followers arrived 4.26.14 there. And a battle takes place both on the battlements and below around the gates, where Gontharis had taken his stand, in which 4.26.15 neither side had the worse of it. And those who were loyal to the emperor were about to gather from the camps and defeat the mutineers by force. For Gontharis had not yet deceived them all, but most still remained uncorrupted in their 4.26.16 loyalty. But Areobindus, then seeing men being killed for the first time (for he happened not yet to be accustomed to this sight), was struck with terror and, 4.26.17 growing cowardly and unable to bear what he saw, fled. There is a certain temple within the enclosure of Carthage near the sea-shore, where men live for whom matters of religion are scrupulously practiced; we have always been accustomed to call these men monks; Solomon, having built this temple not long before and surrounded it with a wall, 4.26.18 had made it into a very strong fortress. Taking refuge here Areobindus rushed in, where he happened to have sent both his wife and 4.26.19 his sister. Then Artabanes too went away, and all the rest withdrew from there as each one 4.26.20 could. But Gontharis, having won a decisive victory, took the Palace with the mutineers, and was already guarding both the gates and the harbour most 4.26.21 diligently. First, then, he sent for Athanasius, 4.26.22 and he came to him without any delay. And using much flattery he gave the impression that the deed pleased him 4.26.23 very much. Then, sending the priest of the city, he commanded Areobindus, after receiving pledges, to come to the Palace, threatening that if he disobeyed he would both besiege him and no longer give him pledges for his safety, 4.26.24 but would by every means capture and kill him. The priest Reparatus, then, insisted that he would swear to Areobindus by the will of Gontharis that nothing unpleasant would happen to him from that man, and he told him all that he had threatened if the 4.26.25 man did not obey. And Areobindus, in fear, agreed to follow the priest at once, if, after performing the sacred rite of the holy bath, as is customary, he would then swear to him and give pledges for his 4.26.26 safety. The priest, then, did accordingly. But Areobindus followed him without any delay, wearing a garment suitable neither for a general nor for any other military man, but entirely befitting a slave or a private person; the Romans call it a *casula* in the Latin 4.26.27 tongue. And when they came near the Palace, taking the holy scriptures in his hands from the 4.26.28 priest, he came into Gontharis's presence. And falling prostrate he lay there for a long time, offering him his supplication and the holy scriptures and the child, who had happened to be deemed worthy of the holy bath, in whose name the priest, as has been told by me, had given him the pledge. 4.26.29 But when Gontharis with difficulty raised him up, he enquired of Gontharis by all that is holy, 4.26.30 if his safety was secure. And he bade him be of very good courage now; for he would suffer nothing unpleasant from him, but on the next day would depart from Carthage with his wife and his 4.26.31 possessions. Then, having sent away the priest Reparatus, he bade both Areobindus and Athanasius to dine with him in the 4.26.32 Palace. And while Areobindus was dining, he honored him; for he made him recline first on the couch; but after he had dined, he did not let him go, but forced him to sleep alone in a chamber; where he sent Ulitheus against him with some 4.26.33 others. And they killed him as he was wailing and uttering frequent cries and speaking many things to them calculated to move them to pity. Athanasius, however, they spared, despising, I think, the man's old age. 4.27.1 On the following day Gontharis sent the head of Areobindus to Antalas, but he decided to deprive him of the money and the soldiers. 4.27.2 Antalas, therefore, because nothing of the agreements
