While the bridegroom Word was proclaiming such things to his own bride, the holy and sacred church, fittingly this bridesman has roused and raised up her who was desolate, who lay a corpse, who was hopeless in the sight of men, having stretched forth your own hands through the common prayers of us all, by the will of God the universal king and by the manifestation of the power of Jesus Christ, and having raised her up, he has established her to be such as he was taught from the record of the sacred oracles. 10.4.55 This is indeed a very great marvel, and beyond all astonishment, especially to those who attend only to the outward appearance; but more wonderful than wonders are the archetypes and the intelligible and divinely-fitting prototypes of these things, I mean the renewals of the inspired and rational building up in souls; 10.4.56 which the very Son of God himself created after his own image, having bestowed on it in every way and in all respects the divine likeness, an incorruptible nature, incorporeal, rational, foreign to all earthly matter, a self-intelligent essence, having once for all in the beginning brought it into being out of non-being, he fashioned it a holy bride and a most holy temple for himself and for the Father; which he himself also clearly makes known, confessing and saying, 'I will dwell in them and walk among them, and I will be their God and they shall be my people.' And such is the perfect and purified soul, having been thus from the beginning, so as to be a shrine for the heavenly Word; 10.4.57 But through the envy and jealousy of the evil-loving demon, having become by its own free choice a lover of passion and a lover of evil, when the Divine had withdrawn from it, as if desolate of a protector, it was exposed as an easy prey and ready for the plotting of those who had long been envious of it, and being cast down by the city-takers and engines of invisible enemies and spiritual foes, it has fallen a terrible fall, so that not even one stone upon another of virtue was left standing in it, but it lay wholly and altogether dead upon the ground, utterly bereft of its natural conceptions of God. 10.4.58 Indeed, having fallen, that very thing which had been fashioned in the image of God was ravaged, not by this boar from the wood that is visible to us, but by some destructive demon and intelligible wild beasts, who also, having set it aflame with passions as with the fiery darts of their own wickedness, burned with fire the truly divine sanctuary of God and profaned to the ground the tabernacle of His name, then having buried the wretched one under a great heap of earth, they turned it over to the hopelessness of all salvation; 10.4.59 But its guardian, the divinely-radiant and saving Word, after it had suffered the just penalty for its sins, again from the beginning took it up anew, being moved by the love for mankind of the all-good Father. 10.4.60 Therefore, having first chosen the souls of the highest rulers, he cleansed the whole world of all the impious and destructive men and of the terrible and God-hating tyrants through these most God-beloved men; and then the men known to him, who had long been consecrated to him throughout their lives, but were hidden as in a storm of evils under his protection, he brought them to light and honored them worthily with the magnificent gifts of the Father, and again through these he cleansed and polished the souls that were lately defiled and heaped up with all kinds of material and the rubbish of impious decrees, with the trenching-tools and mattocks of the striking teachings of his doctrines, 10.4.61 and having rendered the place of the minds of you all bright and clear, he then handed it over to this all-wise and God-beloved leader; who, being discerning and rational in other matters, and well discerning and distinguishing the mind of the souls allotted to him, from the very first day, so to speak, has not yet ceased building up to the present time, at one time fitting transparent gold, at another tested and pure silver and precious and costly stones in you all, so that again a sacred and mystical by the deeds

τοιαῦτα τοῦ νυμφίου λόγου πρὸς τὴν ἑαυτοῦ νύμφην τὴν ἱερὰν καὶ ἁγίαν ἐκκλησίαν ἐπιφωνοῦντος, εἰκότως ὁ νυμφοστόλος ὅδε αὐτήν, τὴν ἔρημον, τὴν πτῶμα κειμένην, τὴν παρὰ ἀνθρώποις ἀνέλπιδα, ταῖς κοιναῖς ἁπάντων ἡμῶν εὐχαῖς χεῖρας τὰς ὑμῶν αὐτῶν ὀρέξας ἐξήγειρεν καὶ ἐξανέσ τησεν θεοῦ τοῦ παμβασιλέως νεύματι καὶ τῆς Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ δυνάμεως ἐπιφανείᾳ τοιαύτην τε ἀναστήσας κατεστήσατο, οἵαν ἐκ τῆς τῶν ἱερῶν χρησμῶν καταγραφῆς ἐδιδάσκετο. 10.4.55 θαῦμα μὲν οὖν μέγιστον τοῦτο καὶ πέρα πάσης ἐκπλήξεως, μάλιστα τοῖς ἐπὶ μόνῃ τῇ τῶν ἔξωθεν φαντασίᾳ τὸν νοῦν προσανέχουσιν· θαυμάτων δὲ θαυμασιώτερα τά τε ἀρχέτυπα καὶ τούτων τὰ πρωτότυπα νοητὰ καὶ θεοπρεπῆ παραδείγματα, τὰ τῆς ἐνθέου φημὶ καὶ λογικῆς ἐν ψυχαῖς οἰκοδομῆς ἀνανεώματα· 10.4.56 ἣν αὐτὸς ὁ θεόπαις κατ' εἰκόνα τὴν αὐτὸς αὐτοῦ δημιουργήσας πάντῃ τε καὶ κατὰ πάντα τὸ θεοείκελον δεδωρημένος, ἄφθαρτον φύσιν, ἀσώματον, λογικήν, πάσης γεώδους ὕλης ἀλλοτρίαν, αὐτονοερὰν οὐσίαν, ἅπαξ τὸ πρῶτον ἐκ τοῦ μὴ ὄντος εἰς τὸ εἶναι συστησάμενος, νύμφην ἁγίαν καὶ νεὼν πανίερον ἑαυτῷ τε καὶ τῷ πατρὶ κατειργάσατο· ὃ καὶ σαφῶς αὐτὸς ὁμολογῶν ἐκφαίνει, λέγων ἐνοικήσω ἐν αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐμπεριπατήσω, καὶ ἔσομαι αὐτῶν θεὸς καὶ αὐτοὶ ἔσονταί μοι λαός. καὶ τοιαύτη μὲν ἡ τελεία καὶ κεκαθαρμένη ψυχή, ἀρχῆθεν οὕτω γεγενημένη, οἵα τὸν οὐράνιον λόγον ἀγαλματοφορεῖν· 10.4.57 ἀλλὰ γὰρ φθόνῳ καὶ ζήλῳ τοῦ φιλοπονήρου δαίμονος φιλοπαθὴς καὶ φιλοπόνηρος ἐξ αὐτεξουσίου αἱρέσεως γενομένη, ὑπαναχωρήσαντος αὐτῆς τοῦ θείου ὡς ἂν ἔρημος προστάτου, εὐάλωτος καὶ εἰς ἐπιβουλὴν εὐχερὴς τοῖς ἐκ μακροῦ διαφθονουμένοις ἀπελήλεγκται, ταῖς τε τῶν ἀοράτων ἐχθρῶν καὶ νοητῶν πολεμίων ἑλεπόλεσι καὶ μηχαναῖς καταβληθεῖσα, πτῶμα ἐξαίσιον καταπέπτωκεν, ὡς ὅσον οὐδ' ἐπὶ λίθῳ λίθον τῆς ἀρετῆς ἑστῶτα ἐν αὐτῇ διαμεῖναι, ὅλην δὲ δι' ὅλου χαμαὶ κεῖσθαι νεκράν, τῶν περὶ θεοῦ φυσικῶν ἐννοιῶν πάμπαν ἀπεστερημένην. 10.4.58 πεπτωκυῖαν δῆτα αὐτὴν ἐκείνην τὴν κατ' εἰκόνα θεοῦ κατασκευασθεῖσαν ἐλυμήνατο οὐχ ὗς οὗτος ὁ ἐκ δρυμοῦ τοῦ παρ' ἡμῖν ὁρατοῦ, ἀλλά τις φθοροποιὸς δαίμων καὶ θῆρες ἄγριοι νοητοί, οἳ καὶ τοῖς πάθεσιν οἷα πεπυρακτωμένοις τῆς σφῶν κακίας βέλεσιν αὐτὴν ἐξυφάψαντες, ἐνεπύρισαν ἐν πυρὶ τὸ θεῖον ὄντως ἁγιαστήριον τοῦ θεοῦ εἰς τὴν γῆν τε ἐβεβήλωσαν τὸ σκήνωμα τοῦ ὀνόματος αὐτοῦ, εἶτα πολλῷ τῷ προσχώματι τὴν ἀθλίαν κατορύξαντες, εἰς ἀνέλπιστον πάσης περιέτρεψαν σωτηρίας· 10.4.59 ἀλλ' ὅ γε κηδεμὼν αὐτῆς λόγος ὁ θεοφεγγὴς καὶ σωτήριος τὴν κατ' ἀξίαν δίκην τῶν ἁμαρτημάτων ὑποσχοῦσαν αὖθις ἐξ ὑπαρχῆς ἀνελάμβανεν, πατρὸς παναγάθου φιλανθρωπίᾳ πειθόμενος. 10.4.60 αὐτὰς δὴ οὖν πρώτας τὰς τῶν ἀνωτάτω βασιλευόντων ψυχὰς προελόμενος, τῶν μὲν δυσσεβῶν καὶ ὀλεθρίων πάντων αὐτῶν τε τῶν δεινῶν καὶ θεομισῶν τυράννων τὴν οἰκουμένην ἅπασαν δι' αὐτῶν τῶν θεοφιλεστάτων ἐκαθήρατο· εἶτα δὲ τοὺς αὐτῷ γνωρίμους ἄνδρας, τοὺς πάλαι διὰ βίου ἱερωμένους αὐτῷ, κρύβδην γε μὴν ὡς ἐν κακῶν χειμῶνι πρὸς τῆς αὐτοῦ σκέπης καλυπτομένους, εἰς φανερὸν ἀγαγὼν καὶ ταῖς τοῦ πατρὸς μεγαλοδωρεαῖς ἐπαξίως τιμήσας, αὖθις καὶ διὰ τούτων τὰς μικρῷ πρόσθεν ἐρρυπωμένας ψυχὰς ὕλης τε παντοίας καὶ χώματος ἀσεβῶν ἐπιταγμάτων συμπεφορημένας ὄρυξι καὶ δικέλλαις ταῖς πληκτικαῖς τῶν μαθημάτων διδασκαλίαις ἐξεκάθηρέν τε καὶ ἀπέσμηξεν, 10.4.61 λαμπρόν τε καὶ διαυγῆ τῆς πάντων ὑμῶν διανοίας τὸν χῶρον ἀπειργασμένος, ἐνταῦθα λοιπὸν τῷ πανσόφῳ καὶ θεοφιλεῖ τῷδε παραδέδωκεν ἡγεμόνι· ὃς τά τε ἄλλα κριτικὸς καὶ ἐπιλογιστικὸς τυγχάνων τήν τε τῶν αὐτῷ κεκληρωμένων ψυχῶν εὖ διαγινώσκων καὶ φυλο κρινῶν διάνοιαν, ἐκ πρώτης ὡς εἰπεῖν ἡμέρας οἰκοδομῶν οὔπω καὶ εἰς δεῦρο πέπαυται, τοτὲ μὲν διαυγῆ τὸν χρυσόν, τοτὲ δὲ δόκιμον καὶ καθαρὸν τὸ ἀργύριον καὶ τοὺς τιμίους καὶ πολυτελεῖς λίθους ἐν πᾶσιν ὑμῖν ἁρμόττων, ὡς ἱερὰν αὖθις καὶ μυστικὴν ἔργοις τοῖς
