A parrot, therefore, hanging there, cried out "Leo, Leo" frequently; for it had imitated the voice of someone lamenting Leo. Therefore, seizing this opportunity, they beseeched the emperor concerning Leo, saying that this animal would be an accusation against us, if it called for its master, while we were so forgetful of him. In this way they did not fail in their purpose. But pay attention, beloved, that the chroniclers disagree with one another here. For Scylitzes says that Michael was lacking in natural offspring; for those who are always engaged in drunkenness, as experts on such matters say, do not have fertile seed for the mysteries of Aphrodite. If this is so, how then could Leo be the son of Michael? But Zonaras says that in truth he was the son of Michael, 552 but in appearance of Basil; for the mother of Leo (this was Eudocia, the daughter of Inger) who had previously had an affair with Michael, was joined in marriage by him to Basil when she was pregnant. For Michael had become so intimate with him that he even placed a diadem on him, taking the occasion from a spirited horse which no one dared to mount; for Basil was admirable in both appearance and daring. This emperor Basil, once while hunting, encountered a huge stag. When he raised his sword-bearing hand against the stag, the animal resisted and defended itself against its pursuer with its antlers. And when one of the branching antlers became entangled in the emperor's belt, he was carried aloft on the antlers; and he might have been destroyed if someone had not saved him by cutting the belt with a sword. To whom indeed the one saved by him gave a fine reward for his salvation, the cutting off of his head, saying that he had drawn a sword against the emperor. Upon these events, then, the divine Ignatius departed from this life. Photius, however, always thirsting for the throne and striving to attain the church again, contrived something cunning and devious. He took only the beginnings 553 of the names of the emperor, of his sons, and also of the Augusta, and composed the word Beklas. And having clarified this, he seemed to the emperor to be great in wisdom, and again inherited the much-coveted throne. And so much for these matters, but the Rus' came to the unerring religion during the reign of this emperor.

τὴν ἀφορμὴν ἐκ τοῦ θρασέος ἵππου λαβών, ᾧ οὐδεὶς ἐπιβῆναι ἐτόλμα· θαυμαστὸς γὰρ ἦν Βασίλειος κατά γε εἶδος καὶ τόλμαν. Ὁ βασιλεὺς
οὗτος Βασίλειός ποτε κυνηγετῶν εὐμεγέθει ἐντυγχάνει ἐλάφῳ. ἡνίκα γοῦν χεῖρα ξιφήρη κατὰ τῆς ἐλάφου ᾖρεν, ἀντέστη τὸ ζῶον καὶ
τοῖς κέρασιν ἠμύνατο τὸν διώκοντα. καὶ τῇ ζώνῃ δὲ τοῦ βασιλέως ἐμπαρέντος τινὸς τῶν παραφυομένων κεράτων μετέωρος ἐκεῖνος
τοῖς κέρασιν ἐφέρετο· καὶ τάχα ἂν ἠνάλωτο εἰ μή τις ξίφει τεμὼν τὴν ζώνην αὐτὸν διεσώσατο. ᾧ δὴ καὶ σῶστρα καλὰ δέδωκεν ὁ

Βεκλᾶς συντίθησι. καὶ τοῦτο σαφηνίσας ἔδοξεν εἶναι βασιλεῖ μέγας ἐπὶ σοφίᾳ, καὶ πάλιν τὸν πολύζηλον κατακληροῦται θρόνον.
καὶ περὶ μὲν τούτων οὕτως, οἱ δὲ Ῥωσοὶ ἐπὶ τούτου τοῦ βασιλέως εἰς τὴν ἀπλανῆ θρησκείαν ἦλθον.
