both parts of the sea, but where Israel was; so that seeing they might be encouraged 2361 saying: This is my God, who was formerly disbelieved. 21, 29. 9Your judgment draws near, says the Lord God. Your counsels have drawn near, says the king of Jacob. Let them draw near and announce to you what will happen, or tell what the former things were, and we will apply our mind, and we shall know, what are the last things, and the things to come9, etc. Having spoken of the change for the better of the former desert, he passes to another order, which remained in the error of idols, not understanding that the hand of the Lord has done these things. Therefore, nothing is left for you but condemnation, you who have been insensitive to so great a grace. Wherefore he adds: Your counsels have drawn near. Instead of which Symmachus says: Bring near, he says, your strong ones. And Theodotion: The strongholds. And Aquila: Ossifications; that is, bring your gods into the midst. Thus they interpreted..... CHAPTER 42. 1-9. 9Jacob my servant, I will help him. Israel my chosen one, my soul has accepted him. I have given my spirit upon him, he will bring forth judgment to the nations; he will not cry out, nor will he raise his voice, nor will his voice be heard outside9, etc. ... it was foretold, saying: I will give a beginning to Zion. And what this is, he has clearly added. For it is said to have been given to the Church as a beginning, inasmuch as He became man, having obtained dominion over all. Wherefore he also calls him Jacob, as having been born according to the flesh from the blood of Israel. I will help him, he says. For the Father worked with him, as performing great deeds through his own power. And he is also choice, because he is also fair in beauty beyond the sons of men. And acceptable, as beloved. For the Father was well pleased in him, saying: "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." And having been anointed, according to his human nature, he is said to have partaken of the Holy Spirit, although he gives the Spirit, and sanctifies creation. For when he was baptized, he says, the Spirit came upon him. And he was anointed to bring forth judgment to the nations, that is, righteous judgment. For he has justified them by condemning the covetous Satan, saying: "Now is the judgment of this world. Now the ruler of this world will be cast out. And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself." Then, since he went through human life quietly and gently, with great restraint, not even permitting those who were healed to make him known, he says, He will not raise his voice, nor will his voice be heard outside. For he did not spend time anywhere outside Judea and Galilee. And he came 2364 as far as the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and of Caesarea Philippi. But he did not set foot in the cities of the foreigners. Thus, he says, he will pass through without noise, so as not to grieve even the weakest, and for this reason he is compared to a reed, and a bruised one at that. But he will not quench a smoking flax. For this is the smouldering, which the others rendered as dim. And they say that the smouldering flax signifies the one who is puffed up in vain by the mind of his flesh. For he did not grieve the humble, he did not pursue the proud, being gentle to all, and lowly in heart. But some said that the smouldering flax is the earthly man, preserving a small spark of virtue or piety. For comforting this one, he does not allow him to go into despair, legislating repentance seventy times seven; and with boldness he proclaimed to all the things concerning the judgment of God. And he did not cease before, like a light, he shone forth through the resurrection from the dead, which he hinted at, saying: He will shine forth, and he will not be broken. For those who contrived death for him have attempted to break and extinguish him. For men are broken by death. But Christ alone became stronger than death. And having shone forth, he did not cease, until he should set judgment on the earth, that is, before he arranged on earth the administration and judgment concerning the Church, which he handed over to his disciples. For in these things he seems to call the law judgment, as it has been said concerning Israel, that there he gave him ordinances and judgment. And again: You have wrought judgment and justice in Jacob. And some say, that the law being in shadows and types, into truth
