we should live godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God, and our Savior Jesus Christ. 95.1029 For if it happens that a faithful woman cohabiting with an unbeliever is not virtuous, the blasphemy is accustomed to pass on to God. Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem you from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

CHAPTER 3. Put them in mind to be subject to principalities, and powers, to obey magistrates, to

be ready to every good work, to speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, showing all meekness unto all men. For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, in malice, and living in envy, hateful, and hating one another. But after that the kindness and love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. This is a faithful saying; and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men. But avoid foolish questions and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law. For they are unprofitable and vain. A man that is an heretic after the first and second admonition reject, knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being self-condemned. When I shall send Artemas unto thee, or Tychicus, be diligent to come unto me to Nicopolis. For I have determined there to winter. Bring Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey diligently, that nothing be wanting unto them. And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful. All that are with me salute thee. Greet them that love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen. To Titus, ordained the first bishop of the church of the Cretians, was written from Nicopolis of Macedonia. 7 lines.

TO THE EPISTLE TO PHILEMON. Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother, to Philemon our

beloved and our fellow-worker, and to our beloved Apphia, and to Archippus our fellow-soldier, and to the dwelling Church, grace 95.1032 to you and peace from God our Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. He does not immediately from the outset ask for the favor, but first he admires the man and praises him for his accomplishments, praising his love, and his faith toward the Lord, from which he was also generous to all the saints. I thank God always, making mention of you in my prayers, hearing of your love, and the faith, which you have toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all the saints, that the service of your faith may become effective in the knowledge of every good thing that is in us unto Christ Jesus. For we have great joy and consolation in your love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by you, brother. Wherefore, having much boldness in Christ to command you what is fitting, for love's sake, I rather beseech you, being such a one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ. I beseech you for my child, whom I have begotten in my bonds, Onesimus, who was once unprofitable to you, but now is profitable to you and to me, whom I have sent back. You therefore receive him, that is, my own bowels, whom I wished to
