and of Hulda, who did not deem Your only-begotten Son unworthy to be born of a woman, who also in the tent of witness and in the temple appointed the guards of Your holy gates; You Yourself now also look upon this Your servant, who is being appointed to the diaconate, and give to her the Holy Spirit and cleanse her from every defilement of flesh and spirit, so that she may worthily accomplish the work entrusted to her, to Your glory and the praise of Your Christ, through whom to You be glory and worship in the Holy Spirit, unto the ages. Amen. And concerning subdeacons, I, Thomas, give charge to you, the bishops. When ordaining a subdeacon, O bishop, you shall lay your hands upon him and say: Master, God, creator of heaven and earth and of all things in them, who also in the tent of witness appointed the temple-keepers as guardians of Your holy vessels; You Yourself also now look upon this Your servant, who has been appointed a subdeacon, and give him the Holy Spirit, that he may worthily handle Your liturgical vessels and do Your will always, through Your Christ, through whom to you be glory, honor, and reverence in the Holy Spirit, unto the ages. Amen. And concerning readers, I, Matthew, who am also Levi, once a tax-collector, give charge. Appoint a reader by laying your hand on him, and praying to God, say: O eternal God, abundant in mercy and compassion, who made manifest the constitution of the world through Your workings and who preserves the number of Your elect in the whole world; You Yourself also now look upon Your servant, who is entrusted to read Your holy scriptures to Your people, and give him a holy Spirit, a prophetic spirit. You who made Ezra Your servant wise to read Your laws to Your people, now also, being called upon by us, make Your servant wise and grant to him, having blamelessly accomplished the work entrusted to him, to be shown worthy of a higher degree through Christ, through whom to You be the glory and the reverence in the Holy Spirit, unto the ages. Amen. And I, James the son of Alphaeus, give charge concerning confessors. A confessor is not ordained, for this is a matter of resolve and endurance; but he is worthy of great honor, as one who has confessed the name of God and of His Christ
