For 185 years are counted, and one year, in which Nehemiah built the wall of the city. Therefore we find the 186 years to be 2300 Hebrew months, as the octaeteris accordingly adds the three intercalary months to these. And from Artaxerxes, from whom the word went forth to build Jerusalem, 70 weeks are completed. But we have demonstrated these things privately and more accurately in the work on the weeks and on this prophecy. I marvel at the Jews for saying that the Lord has not yet come, and at the followers of Marcion that he was not foretold by the prophecies, when the scriptures show it so plainly before their eyes. And a little after: Therefore the times from Adam until the advent of the Lord and the resurrection amount to 5531 years. From which time until the 250th Olympiad are 109 years, as has been demonstrated by us in what precedes. 394 From Eusebius of Pamphilus concerning the same things Jesus Christ, the Son of God, our Lord, according to the prophecies concerning him, went to his passion in the 19th year of the reign of Tiberius. At which time we have also found these things recorded word for word in other Greek commentaries. The sun was eclipsed. Bithynia was shaken. Most of Nicaea fell. Which things also agree with what happened at the passion of our Savior. And Phlegon, who compiled the Olympiads, writes about the same things in his 13th book in these very words: In the 4th year of the 202nd Olympiad, there was an eclipse of the sun, the greatest ever known before, and night came at the sixth hour of the day, so that even stars appeared in the sky. And a great earthquake in Bithynia overthrew most of Nicaea. So much from the aforementioned man. And a proof that the Savior suffered in this year would be the testimony of the Lord's gospel according to John, which testifies that the time of his teaching after the 15th year of Tiberius lasted for three years. And at the same times Josephus also records that on the day of Pentecost the priests first perceived a movement and a noise, then heard a sudden voice from within the innermost sanctuary saying in these very words: Let us depart from here. And the same Josephus records something else, that at the same time, when Pilate the governor set up the images of Caesar by night in the temple, which was not lawful, he initiated a very great tumult and sedition for the Jews; from which so many successive calamities befell the Jewish nation. Flaccus Asylaeus is sent by Tiberius as prefect of Alexandria and Egypt. And he plotted many things against the Jewish nation. That Africanus, in saying 5531, and not 5533, is mistaken by two years, according to the unerring narration of the Gospels. For it is manifest that in about the beginning of his 30th year, or a little more or less, on account of what is said, «And Jesus himself was 395 about 30 years of age» by the great evangelist Luke, he was baptized and taught and healed every disease and every infirmity for three years; so that the time from his divine conception, beginning in the 5501st year of the world on the first of the first-created month of Nisan, March 25, until the life-giving resurrection, beginning in the 5534th year on the same coinciding day of March 25, amounts to 33 years and one day; from this resurrection until his divine ascension into heaven with a body, befitting God, are 40 days. And from Adam until the same are 5533 years, 40 days. But if anyone disbelieves what is said about the same day, which is often mentioned, that on it our Lord, having trampled down death on the first-created day, brought us life from the dead, let him look at the 11th period of the 532 cyclical years, in the 213th year of the same period, at the 14th day of the Passover according to the Hebrews, and he will find it arriving at the saving passion, which he willingly underwent for our sakes, on the 23rd of the same month of March, on the day of Preparation, and having been buried by Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, he rose on the third day, dawning after the same Preparation, on the first day of the week, being the first of the first month Nisan according to the Hebrews, which is always one and the same as the 25th of the month of March.
