and to the ends of the world because of its notorious wickedness. A persecution has overtaken us, O most blessed one, and the most grievous of persecutions. For of old, Ahab, seeking Elijah the prophet, is said to have set fire to every place, the conflagration revealing the wrath of the impious one; but now the Ahabite in both rank and heart, seeking not only the one inscribed with Elijah, but also his master Jesus Christ, our Lord and God, the Theotokos, and every saint, seeks them out, and having found them, he destroys them with great wrath from every city and country under his hand. Hence altars have been torn down, temples of the Lord desecrated, both in private homes and publically, in monasteries for men and for virgins, those built long ago and those recently erected; a pitiful sight, to see the churches of God stripped of their proper adornment and rendered shapeless, like people roasted alive, some kind of monsters. Who has heard or seen such a thing among the impious of old? Perhaps the Arab who is over you, using reverence, will conduct himself more like a friend of Christ in this matter, but not our Tabeel; Spare, O Lord, and do not give your inheritance completely over to reproach. He burns the images on panels, those on sacred votive offerings, and the tablets that commemorate them, he mocks, he ridicules, he vilifies as abominations, as things hated by God, the things beloved by God and salvific for the world. Oh, who would not shed a tear? Who would not let out a groan, sent up from the depths of his heart? The ways of Zion mourn because there are none who travel them piously. And indeed, all have turned aside, together they have become corrupt; those who seem to be hierarchs and priests, monks and laypeople, every kind and every age, some having made a complete shipwreck of their faith, others, though not having submerged their reason, are yet endangered by half-hearted communion with the heretics out of fear of bodily death. Except that there are some left who have not bent the knee to Baal, and as many as have been numbered by the Lord; before all the first, our sacred head and one of the same rank as your perfection, hierarchs and priests of the Lord, monks and nuns. Of these, some have experienced mockings and scourgings, others bonds and imprisonment, being fed with a measure of bread and water, others confined to exile, others living in deserts and mountains and caves and holes of the earth; and some, having been scourged at once, have gone to the Lord as martyrs. There are also those who, having been put in sacks, were cast into the sea at an untimely hour, as has been made clear by those who saw them. What else? Our holy fathers are anathematized, the impious are proclaimed; infants are brought up in the doctrines of impiety by the tome given to the teachers. There is nowhere a refuge for the body in the inhabited world; it is not possible to utter any pious word, and the hunt is near, so that a man must be on his guard even from his wife. informers and deliverers of notes have been hired for this very purpose by the ruler, wherever anyone might say something displeasing to Caesar, or not be in communion with the impiety, or have a book containing something said about icons, or even an icon itself; and if anyone should receive an exile or minister to those imprisoned for the Lord's sake and be found out, he is immediately seized, flogged, exiled, as a result of which masters even fall subject to their slaves for fear of being informed on. It is fitting for us to say that in this time there is neither ruler nor prophet nor leader, no place to bear fruit before the Lord and find mercy. For this reason we, the unworthy, have cried out these things to your holy soul as from the mouth of all who hold fast to the truth, calling upon it for our help and sympathy; for we know that, even if it is not possible to help in any other way, yet by the aid of prayers it will provide us with a great benefit in our most urgent needs, since it has God well-disposed. But so that you may know in part what the impious doctrines of the godless are, I have sent these along with the letters in notebooks; which I, though unlearned, thought to refute, having been urged on
