the religion of the Christians to observe this very thing without any molestation. 10.5.7 Which things we have decreed to make known most fully to your care, so that you may know that we have given to these same Christians free and unrestricted power to practice their own religion, 10.5.8 which, since your devotedness perceives that it has been granted by us to them without restriction, and that power has been given to others who so wish to follow their own observance and religion, which is something that is clearly to be done in keeping with the tranquility of our times, so that each one may have the power to choose and to practice whatever divinity he wishes. And this has been done by us, so that we might not seem to have detracted anything from any honor or from any religion. 10.5.9 And this, in addition to the other things, we decree concerning the Christians, that their places, in which it was their custom to assemble previously, concerning which also in the letters previously given to your devotedness a different rule was set down in the former time, that if any should appear to have bought them, either from our treasury or from anyone else, they should restore these to the same Christians without money and without any demand for the price, all delay being set aside, without any negligence or ambiguity, and if any happen to have received them as a gift, that they should restore these same places to the same Christians as quickly as possible; 10.5.10 so that either those who bought these same places or those who received them as a gift, if they ask anything of our benevolence, may approach the vicar who is judge in that place, so that provision may be made for them also through our kindness. All of which things it will be necessary to be handed over to the body of the Christians immediately through your diligence without any delay. 10.5.11 And since these same Christians are known to have possessed not only those places in which they were accustomed to assemble, but also other places belonging not to individuals among them, but to the right of their body, that is, of the Christians, you will order all these things, under the law which we have stated before, to be restored to these same Christians, that is, to their body and to each of their assemblies, without any dispute whatsoever, the aforesaid provision of course being observed, that they who restore the same without price, as we have said before, may hope for indemnification from our benevolence. 10.5.12 In all these things you ought to offer the most effective diligence to the aforesaid body of the Christians, so that our command may be fulfilled as quickly as possible, so that in this also provision may be made through our kindness for the common and public tranquility. 10.5.13 For by this measure, as has also been said before, the divine care for us, which we have already experienced in many matters, may remain steadfast for all time. 10.5.14 And so that the limit of this our legislation and benevolence may be brought to the knowledge of all, it is fitting that these things written by us, having been published by your edict, be posted everywhere and brought to the knowledge of all, so that the legislation of this our benevolence may escape the notice of no one.” 10.5.15 COPY OF ANOTHER IMPERIAL ORDINANCE WHICH HE MADE AGAIN, INDICATING THAT THE GIFT WAS TO BE GIVEN TO THE CATHOLIC CHURCH ALONE “Hail, Anulinus, most honored by us. This is the manner of our benevolence, that we wish not only that those things which belong to another by right should not be molested, but also that they should be restored, most honored Anulinus. Wherefore we wish that, 10.5.16 when you receive this letter, if any of those things which belonged to the Catholic Church of the Christians in each of the cities or in other places and are now held either by citizens or by any others, you shall cause these to be restored immediately to these same churches, since
