present things, how would we not be wretched and miserable asking these things from God, which He commanded even those who have them to cast out, freeing us from care, but concerning the things He commanded, to give no diligence; or rather neither to have nor to desire? For this is to babble. For this reason, even when we pray, we accomplish nothing. How then, he says, do the wicked become rich? how the unjust and defiled, who seize and are greedy? Not by God's providing, perish the thought. And how does God allow it? Because He then also allowed it for the rich man, keeping him for a greater punishment. Hear then also what He says to him: Child, you received your good things, and Lazarus his evil things; and now he is comforted, but you are in anguish. So that we too may not hear this voice, living luxuriously in vain and for nothing, and gathering many sins for ourselves, let us choose true riches and exact philosophy, so as to obtain the promised good things. May it be that we all partake of these, by the grace and love for mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom and with whom be glory to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen. 59.247 HOMILY 44. Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves, and were filled. Work not for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life.” 1. The gentle and smooth is not useful everywhere, but there are times when a teacher needs something more striking. For when the disciple is sluggish and dense, it is then necessary to use a goad against him, so as to touch his great sluggishness. This is what the Son of God has also done, both in many other places, and in the present passage. For when the crowds came and found Jesus, and were flattering Him, and saying: Rabbi, when did You get here? showing that He does not desire honor from men, but looks to one thing only, their salvation, He answers them with a rebuke; not wishing to correct them by this alone, but also by revealing their thought and bringing it into the open. For what does He say? Truly, truly, I say to you; with definition and confirmation; you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves, and were filled. He strikes indeed with the word and convicts, but not sharply and severely, but doing this with much forbearance. For He did not say, “O gluttons and slaves to the belly, I have worked so many wonders, and nowhere have you either followed, nor have you marveled at the things that have 59.248.40 happened;” but gently and calmly, You seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate of the loaves, and were filled; signifying not only concerning the past things, but also concerning the present sign. For He all but says this, in what He directs toward them: It was not the miracle of the loaves that astonished you, but being filled. And that He was not speaking by guessing at them, they immediately showed. For they came again for this reason, as expecting to enjoy the same things. For this reason they also said: Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; again drawing Him to carnal food, which was a very great charge and accusation. But He does not stop at reproofs, but also adds teaching to them, saying: Work not for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man gives to you. For God the Father has sealed Him. And what He says is this: Let you have no account of this food, but of that which is spiritual. But since some of those who wish to be fed in idleness have misused this saying, as if Christ were cutting off work, it is seasonable to speak to them also. For they slander Christianity as a whole, so to speak, and cause it to be mocked for idleness. 59.249 But first it is necessary to say what is of Paul. What does he say? Remember the Lord having said: It is more blessed to give than to receive. And yet whence would it be possible for one who has not to give? How then did Jesus say to Martha: You are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary; Mary
