Hence, indeed, Romanos also found a fitting end; for he was deposed from the imperial power, and having been brought to the island of Prote, he was tonsured, having formerly been Drungarius of the fleet. However, his son by Leo, Constantine the Porphyrogennetos, having reigned for 14 years, steered the empire unworthily; for he appeared dissolute, was overcome by wine, was unsympathetic to those who erred, and he entrusted offices to certain common men, while his wife Helen and Basil the parakoimomenos arranged for the offices to be for sale. This Basil, then, was born to Romanos Lekapenos by a concubine, whom indeed this aforementioned Constantine honored as patrician and parakoimomenos, who indeed was not entirely devoid of good deeds; for the sciences—arithmetic, music, astronomy, geometry, and simply all philosophy—which for a long time had been lost through the ignorance and neglect of the rulers, he recovered by his own diligence.
