not light nor the effulgence of light, of which I speak to you, nor indeed external piety, nor a humble and mean habit; for all these things are practices and the fulfillment of commandments, if indeed they are well performed and fulfilled, as the Creator Himself commands. Tears are shed in many ways and are either beneficial or even more harmful; for the time being, they are in themselves utterly unprofitable. (271) And the vigil of monks is not exclusively for them alone, but also for the common people occupied with their work, and women who weave, and goldsmiths and coppersmiths keep vigil more than most monks, and for this reason we say that none of all these virtuous practices is called light. Wherefore also all practices and virtues, when gathered together into one without omission, are not the divine light, for all human practices stand apart from it, and these practices fulfilled by us are called light in our own sphere for the rest who live in wickedness, leading them toward what is good, and, what is darkness in me and blinds me, becomes light to my neighbor and shines for those who see. And lest I be suspected of telling you paradoxical things, listen, and I will speak to you the solution of the riddle: I fast, perhaps, on account of you, that I may appear to be fasting, and this is a goad to my eyes and is fixed like a beam in their midst for sure; but you are enlightened by seeing me, if you do not condemn me, but are instead reproaching yourself as a glutton for sure; for you are guided by this toward self-control of the belly and you plainly learn from it to disdain luxury. Again, I am clothed in mean and ragged garments and walking everywhere in a single tunic, I think to hunt for glory and praise from those who see me and to be seen by them as another, new apostle, and this becomes for me the cause of all harm and truly darkness and a thick cloud in my soul; but it enlightens the people who see me and teaches them to despise adornment, to despise also wealth and to hold to what is mean and to rough clothing, (272) which is also truly the clothing of apostles. οὐ φῶς οὐδέ ἀπαύγασμα φωτός, οὗπέρ σοι λέγω, οὐδέ γε ἡ εὐλάβεια ἡ ἔξωθεν, οὐ σχῆμα τό ταπεινόν καί εὐτελές˙ πάντα γάρ ταῦτα πράξεις καί ἐντολῶν ἐκπλήρωσις, εἴ γε καλῶς τελοῦνται καί ἐκπληροῦνται, ὡς αὐτός ἐντέλλεται ὁ κτίστης. Τά δάκρυα κατά πολλούς ἐκχέονται τούς τρόπους καί ἤ ἐπωφελῆ εἰσιν ἤ καί βλάπτουσι μᾶλλον˙ τέως αὐτά καθ᾿ ἑαυτά ἀνόνητα εἰς ἅπαν. (271) ἡ δ᾿ ἀγρυπνία μοναχῶν οὐκ ἔστι πάντως μόνων, ἀλλά καί τοῦ κοινοῦ λαοῦ ἔργοις ἀσχολουμένων, καί ἀγρυπνοῦσι πλείονα ὑφαίνουσαι γυναῖκες, χρυσοχόοι τε καί χαλκεῖς ἤ μονασταί οἱ πλεῖστοι, καί διά τοῦτο λέγομεν ὅτι τούτων ἁπάντων τῶν ἐναρέτων πράξεων οὐδέν φάος καλεῖται. Ὅπου καί συναγόμεναι εἰς ἕν αἱ πᾶσαι πράξεις καί ἀρεταί ἀνελλιπῶς φῶς οὐκ εἰσί τό θεῖον, διΐστανται γάρ ἐξ αὐτοῦ πᾶσαι πράξεις ἀνθρώπων, καί αὗται μέν αἱ παρ᾿ ἡμῶν ἐκπληρούμεναι πράξεις τό καθ᾿ ἡμᾶς πρός τούς λοιπούς ζῶντας ἐν πονηρίᾳ φῶς λέγονται πρός τά καλά κἀκείνους ὁδηγοῦσαι καί, ὅπερ ἔστιν ἐν ἐμοί σκότος καί ἐκτυφλοῖ με, φῶς τῷ πλησίον γίνεται καί τοῖς ὁρῶσι λάμπει. Καί ἵνα μή παράδοξα ὑποπτευθῶ σοι λέγειν, ἄκουσον, καί λαλήσω σοι αἰνίγματος τήν λύσιν˙ νηστεύω ἴσως διά σέ, ἵνα φανῶ νηστεύων, καί τοῦτο κέντρον μέν ἐμοῦ τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς ὑπάρχει καί ὡς δοκός ἐμπέπηκται μέσον ἐν τούτοις πάντως˙ σύ δέ φωτίζῃ βλέπων με, εἰ μή με κατακρίνῃς, ἀλλ᾿ εἶ μεμφόμενος σαυτόν ὡς γαστρίμαργον πάντως˙ πρός γάρ ἐγκράτειαν γαστρός καθοδηγῇ ἐκ τούτου καί τῆς τρυφῆς ὑπερορᾷν προφανῶς ἐκμανθάνεις. Πάλιν ἐγώ ἐνδέδυμαι εὐτελῆ καί ῥακώδη καί μονοχίτων ἐν παντί περιπατῶν νομίζω δόξαν ἐκ τῶν ὁρώντων με καί ἔπαινον θηρᾶσθαι καί ὡς ἀπόστολος αὐτοῖς ἄλλος νέος ὁρᾶσθαι, καί τοῦτο γίνεται ἐμοί πάσης αἴτιον βλάβης καί σκότος ὄντως καί παχύ νέφος ἐν τῇ ψυχῇ μου˙ τούς δέ ὁρῶντάς με λαούς φωτίζει καί διδάσκει ὑπερφρονεῖν καλλωπισμοῦ, ὑπερφρονεῖν καί πλούτου καί εὐτελοῦς ἀντέχεσθαι καί τραχείας ἐσθῆτος, (272) ὅπερ καί ἔστιν ἀληθῶς ἔνδυμα ἀποστόλων.
