with a strong hand to the disobedient.” 7.1.132 Through which the word clearly proclaims to those who are unruly and opposed to the teaching of Christ, and to those who disobey his mighty hand, that they will not be strong enough to try to wage war against the God who is with us, and that whatever they may plan against us "shall not abide" for them, because Emmanuel is with us. And it is easy to attend to this conclusion, observing the threats against us and the rebellions of the rulers from time to time, and how the end of their threats is always rendered fruitless for them because of the God who is with us. 7.1.133 3. From the same. “This drink first, do it quickly, land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, and the rest who inhabit the seacoast, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. The people sitting in darkness, see a great light, and for those sitting in darkness and the shadow of death a light has dawned for them,” and what follows. 7.1.134 To which he adds: “For every robe gathered with deceit and garment with exchange they shall repay, and they will wish they had been burnt with fire. For a child is born to us, a son also is given to us, whose government is upon his shoulder. And his name is called Angel of great counsel, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Potentate, Prince of Peace, Father of the age to come. For I will bring peace upon the rulers and health to him. Great is his government, and of his peace there is no end, upon the throne of David and his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it in judgment and in righteousness from now and for ever; the zeal of the Lord of Sabaoth will do these things.” 7.1.135 This is now the third time the child is prophesied, the same one being signified in various ways. Since, therefore, it is now our task to demonstrate the manner of God's presence among men, behold through how many things and in what way this is presented: first, he who was called Emmanuel was shown, God born of a virgin; second, the child from the prophetess and the Holy Spirit, being none other than the one foretold; third, the one at hand, being one and the same with the former ones. And so his name is said to be, according to the Seventy, “Angel of great counsel,” and as some of the copies have it, “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Potentate, Prince of Peace, Father of the age to come,” 7.1.136 but according to the Hebrew, as Aquila says: “For a child is born to us, a son is given to us, and the measure was upon his shoulder. And he called his name Wonderful Counselor, Strong, Mighty, Father still, Prince of peace, and of his peace there is no end,” 7.1.137 and as Symmachus: “For a youth was given to us, a son was given to us. And his instruction will be upon his shoulder, and his name will be called Marvel, Counselor, Strong, Mighty, Father of the age, Prince of peace, and of his peace there is no end.” 7.1.138 Therefore, not simply an angel according to the Seventy but “the Angel of the great counsel, and Wonderful Counselor, and Mighty God, and Potentate and Prince of Peace, and Father of the age to come” was prophesied through these words to be born and to be a child. And you have in the preceding texts the Word of God being variously proclaimed both God and Lord, and at the same time the same one being named Angel of the Father, and commander of the host of the Lord. 7.1.139 Who then could it be, according to Aquila and the testimonies still current among the Hebrews, who is born among men, and becomes a “child,” a “Wonderful Counselor” and “Strong,” “Mighty,” and “Father still,” and “Prince of peace,” of which peace he says there will never be an end; and according to Symmachus, a “Marvel, Counselor, Strong, Mighty, Father of the age, Prince of peace,” and this peace infinite and unending; and according to Theodotion, “Wonderfully counseling, Strong, Ruler, Father, Prince of peace, for the increase of instruction, of whose peace there is no end”? 7.1.140 And I leave the following for you yourself to consider,
