we have decided that those things which these same churches formerly possessed, should be restored to their ownership. 10.5.17 Therefore, when your Devotion perceives 10.5.17 this command of ours to be a most clear order, hasten, whether they be gardens or houses or anything whatsoever that belonged to the ownership of these same churches, that all things be restored to them as quickly as possible, so that we may learn that you have rendered most careful obedience to this our command. Farewell, Anulinus, our most honored and beloved.” 10.5.18 COPY OF AN IMPERIAL LETTER BY WHICH HE COMMANDS A SYNOD OF BISHOPS TO BE HELD AT ROME FOR THE UNITY AND CONCORD OF THE CHURCHES “Constantine Augustus to Miltiades, bishop of the Romans, and to Marcus. Since several such documents have been sent to me from Anulinus, the most illustrious proconsul of Africa, in which it is stated that Caecilianus, the bishop of the city of Carthage, is being accused in many matters by some of his colleagues in Africa, and this seems to me a very serious thing that in these provinces, which divine Providence has spontaneously entrusted to my Devotion, and where there is a great multitude of people, a crowd should be found persisting in the worse course, as if dissenting and having differences among the bishops, 10.5.19 it has seemed good to me that Caecilianus himself, with ten bishops of those who seem to accuse him, and ten others whom he himself may consider necessary for his own case, should sail to Rome, so that there, in your presence, and also in the presence of Reticius and Maternus and Marinus, your colleagues, whom I have for this reason commanded to hasten to Rome, he may be able to be heard, as you may learn to be fitting for the most venerable law. 10.5.20 However, so that you may be able to have the fullest knowledge concerning all these matters, I have appended to my letter copies of the documents sent to me by Anulinus, and have sent them to your aforementioned colleagues; upon reading these, your Firmness will decide in what manner the aforesaid case should be most carefully investigated and justly concluded, since it does not escape your care that I pay such reverence to the legitimate catholic church, that I do not wish you to leave any schism or division in any place at all. May the divinity of the great God preserve you for many years, most honored.” 10.5.21 COPY OF AN IMPERIAL LETTER IN WHICH HE ORDERS A SECOND SYNOD TO BE HELD IN ORDER TO REMOVE ALL DISSENSION AMONG THE BISHOPS “Constantine Augustus to Chrestus, bishop of the Syracusans. Already before, when some evilly and perversely began to separate themselves from the worship of the holy and heavenly power and from the catholic faith, wishing to cut short such contentions of theirs, I had so arranged that, with certain bishops having been sent from Gaul, and also with those from Africa of the opposite party having been summoned, who were appropriately, urgently, and persistently contending, and with the bishop of Rome also being present, that which seemed to have been stirred up, might, by their presence, attain a right settlement with all careful examination. 10.5.22 But since, as it happens, some, forgetting both their own salvation and the reverence due to the most holy faith, do not even now cease to prolong their own enmities, being unwilling to agree with the judgment already rendered, and asserting that a few persons indeed expressed their own opinions and decisions, or even that, without all the things that ought to have been investigated first having been accurately examined, they hurried very quickly and sharply to render the judgment, and from all these things it has come to pass that even those very persons who ought to maintain brotherly and like-minded unanimity, are shamefully, or rather abominably, divided from one another, and to those
