of punishments departed to the Lord, having taken up the athlete's crown. What of the blasphemy? the venerable and dread icon of Christ is mocked as an abomination of desolation, as an idol of error; so also every other of the Lord, of the saints. now, he says, is the faith pure and spotless, now, he says, the Lord has spoken peace upon his people and upon his saints and upon those who turn their heart to him. as if peace had already been taken away, since Christ said, peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you, until now, and as if his church were polluted, which the holy Paul proclaims has no spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but is holy and without blemish, some have been completely shipwrecked in the faith, and others, even if they have not been submerged in their thoughts, are nevertheless destroyed by communion with the heresy. But indeed even those who are orthodox in mind are growing dizzy concerning the truth because of the persistence of the persecution, just like those who are benighted by the giant waves of the sea from their inexperience in sailing. All things are pitiful for us and worthy of lamentation. Psalmody handed down from antiquity, in which something is sung about icons, is set aside, the new doctrines are sung instead, impious ones lying in plain sight, others handed down to children by their teachers; and a most godless alteration of all things. We have become, to speak properly, as Sodom and Gomorrah according to our sins, and the storm of heresy, reaching its peak, peaks daily, and one who will rouse Christ our God to rebuke this wicked sea has not been found. But become for us one of the twelve apostles, O most blessed one, awaken the sleepless eye, who sleeps according to his economy, for we are utterly perishing. If in some other way there is some remedy of help, hasten as a knowledgeable man to heal the sick. Yes, we pray, most holy one, we entreat, we beseech; we are your members, since all the faithful are the body of Christ and members in part. Permit also our other holy fathers to extend a hand of intercession, so that from many persons there may be mercy for us from God. For this reason indeed is the letter, and the letter-carrier has been sent with the intention of all, even if from us alone, the least, filling their role. So that your Eminence might know in part what the doctrines of the godless are, I have sent along with these letters in notebooks those things which I, an unlearned man, saw fit to refute, having been urged on by others. I ask from your God-wise self that what is lacking be examined and corrected, and that I receive pardon for my faults, but also that our fellow servant and brother be strengthened both for the dissemination of the letters of other holy persons which we have sent and indeed, God willing, for his return and recantation here. 277 {1To the Lavra of Saint Sabas}1 To my God-honored, beloved and spiritual father, the lord abbot of the renowned lavra of our all-blessed holy father Sabas, and to my holy fathers under him Theodore, least presbyter and abbot of the Stoudion. Great joy and a mantle of glory it is to me, the unworthy one, that I have been deemed worthy to send my humble letter to a holy place, to the tents of the holy ones of your longed-for paternity. For since it was not possible for me to come in the presence of the body to your footsteps and to see the holy precinct, your sacred domain, which I the humble one hold in reverence as a city of God, the good God was pleased through the visit of this letter to fulfill the desire of me, a sinner. And so, as if present before your feet, I embrace you with holy longing and venerate the divine ground, in which is treasured the chosen vessel of God, the light of monks, the lamp of the world, the one who submerged the spiritual Pharaoh and the guide of the holy nation, the master of the holy land and the bestower of the divine monasteries. I also greet the other venerable tombs, upon which are the sacred bodies of the holy ones, for whom the wealth of virtues in the night of this life with stars
