to take thought for the salvation of the regiments under you.” But Tatikios, seeing that the famine was great (for indeed the head of an ox was being sold for three gold staters), and despairing of the capture of Antioch, having already departed from there, embarked on the Roman fleet that was stationed in the harbor of Soudi and reached Cyprus. 11.4.4 After he had withdrawn, Bohemund, still keeping the Armenian's proposal submerged and being nourished by good hopes and acquiring for himself the authority over Antioch, said to the counts: “You see how long a time we have already toiled here in vain, not only having accomplished nothing good up to now, but also how we have already become a prey to famine, unless we devise something better for our own salvation.” And when they asked what this might be, he himself said: “God does not give all victories to leaders by the sword, nor are such things always achieved through battle, but what toil has not given, speech has often granted, and a course of action with friendship and conciliation has set up greater trophies. Therefore, we must not waste time in vain, but rather hasten before Kerbogha arrives to accomplish something intelligent and manly for the sake of our salvation; and let each of us eagerly win over the barbarian who guards his own assigned post. And if you wish, let the guardianship of this very city be established as a prize for the one who first accomplishes this task, until he who is to take it over from us shall come from the emperor. Perhaps, then, not even in this way shall we be able to accomplish anything good.” 11.4.5 Thus the clever Bohemund, being a lover of power not so much for the Latins and the common good as for his own honor, having planned and spoken and deceived, did not miss his mark, as the narrative will show as it proceeds. To this, therefore, all the counts assented and set to work. And at daybreak, Bohemund immediately went to the tower; and the Armenian, according to the agreements, opened the gates slightly. And he straightway leaps up with his followers, quicker than a word, and was seen by those both inside and outside standing on the battlements of the tower and ordering the war trumpet to sound. And at that moment a strange thing was to be seen happening, the Turks, terrified, immediately fleeing through the opposite gate, and only a few brave men among them being left behind for the guard of the citadel; while the Celts from outside, following at Bohemund's heels, climbed up by ladders and immediately took possession of the city of Antioch. And Tancred, immediately taking up a sufficient number of Celts, pursued after the fugitives; and many were killed, and many were wounded. 11.4.6 But Kerbogha, having arrived with countless thousands to aid the city of Antioch, and finding it already captured, pitched his camp and, having made a trench and placed his baggage in it, planned to besiege the city. But before he had yet set to work, the Celts, coming out, fell upon him; and then a great war broke out between them. And the Turks had the upper hand; and the Latins were shut up inside the gates, having the struggle on both sides, both from those guarding the citadel (for the barbarians still held this) and from the Turks besieging them from outside. And Bohemund, being a clever man and wishing to usurp the rule of Antioch, said again in the guise of advice: “It is not right,” he says to the counts, “for the same men to fight at the same time against those within and those without, but having been divided in two, in unequal parts in proportion to the enemies fighting against us on either side, thus to undertake the battle against them. It shall be mine, therefore, to fight against those guarding the acropolis, if this seems good to you also; while the rest shall be concerned with those outside

Ἀλλ' οὔπω ἔργου ἁψάμενον ἐπικαταλαμβάνουσιν αὐτὸν ἐξελθόντες οἱ Κελτοί· καὶ τηνικαῦτα μέγας ἀναμεταξὺ ἀναρρήγνυται πόλεμος. Εἶχον δὲ τὴν νικῶσαν οἱ Τοῦρκοι· καὶ οἱ Λατῖνοι εἴσω τῶν πυλῶν συνεκλείοντο, τὸν μόθον ἑκατέρωθεν ἔχοντες ἀπό τε τῶν τὸ κουλᾶ φρουρούντων (ἔτι γὰρ τοῦτο κατεῖχον οἱ βάρβαροι) ἀπό τε τῶν ἔξωθεν παρακαθημένων Τούρκων. ∆εινὸς δὲ ἀνὴρ ὢν ὁ Βαϊμοῦντος καὶ τὴν τῆς Ἀντιοχείας ἀρχὴν σφετερίσασθαι θέλων ἐν σχήματι συμβουλῆς αὖθις· «Οὐ χρή, φησι πρὸς τοὺς κόμητας, τοὺς αὐτοὺς καθ' ἑκάτερον μέρος ἐν ταὐτῷ μετά τε τῶν ἐντὸς καὶ ἐκτὸς μάχεσθαι, ἀλλὰ διχῆ διαιρεθέντας ἐν ἀνίσοις τμήμασι πρὸς λόγον τῶν ἑκατέρωθεν πρὸς ἡμᾶς μαχομένων ἐχθρῶν, οὕτω τὴν πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἀναδέχεσθαι μάχην. Ἐμοὶ μὲν οὖν ἐξέσται μετὰ τῶν τὴν ἀκρόπολιν τηρούντων μάχεσθαι, εἰ καὶ ὑμῖν τοῦτο συνδόξειε· τοῖς δέ γε λοιποῖς μετὰ τῶν ἔξωθεν μελήσει
