let him be cast out. If a faithful man has a concubine, if she is a slave, let him cease and marry her according to the law, but if she is a free woman, let him marry her according to the law; but if not, let him be cast out. If anyone follows Hellenic customs or Jewish fables, let him either change or be cast out. If anyone is given to theater-madness or hunting or horse racing or contests, let him either cease or be cast out. Let one who is to be catechized be catechized for three years; but if one is zealous and has good will in the matter, let him be received, because not the time, but the character is judged. If the teacher is a layman, but is experienced in the word and of a serious character, let him teach; “For they shall all be taught by God.” Let every faithful man or faithful woman, rising from sleep in the morning, having washed themselves, pray before they undertake any work; but if any instruction of the word takes place, let them prefer the word of piety to their work. Let a faithful man or a faithful woman attend to their household servants kindly, as we also commanded in the preceding and taught in the epistles. I Paul and I Peter command. Let slaves work five days, but on the Sabbath and the Lord's day let them have leisure for the Church for the teaching of piety; for we have said that the Sabbath has the account of creation, but the Lord's day that of the resurrection. Let the slaves rest for all of Great Week and the one after it, because the one is of the passion, and the other of the resurrection, and there is need for instruction, as to who died and rose, or who permitted and also raised him. Let them rest on the Ascension because of the conclusion of the economy according to Christ. Let them rest on Pentecost because of the coming of the Holy Spirit which was given to those who believed in Christ. Let them rest on the feast of the nativity because on it an unexpected grace was given to men, that the Word of God, Jesus the Christ, was born of Mary the virgin for the salvation of the world. Let them rest on the feast of the Epiphany because on it a manifestation of the divinity of Christ occurred, the Father having testified to him at the baptism and the Paraclete in the form of a dove having pointed out to those present the one who was testified to. Let them rest on the days of the apostles; for they were appointed your teachers in Christ and deemed you worthy of the Holy Spirit. Let them rest on the day of Stephen the first martyr and of the rest of the holy martyrs who preferred Christ to their own life.
