But here, speaking about God and Christ, they did not suppose many mothers, but the one who had truly borne him, and not many brothers, but the sons of Joseph from his other, true wife; and you cannot arm yourself against the truth. And let not the saying which the Lord spoke deceive you, "Who is my mother and my brothers?" For he did not say these things denying his mother, but overturning the unseasonableness of the one who said it, while so great a crowd stood around and his salvific teaching was being poured forth and he was occupied with healings and preaching; for it seemed to be a distraction for the one speaking to interrupt him by saying "Behold, your mother and your brothers." And if it were not that he received it with joy, not as being ignorant that they had come before he heard, but foreknowing that they stood outside, he would have overturned the untimely voice of the speaker with a rebuke, as he once said also to Peter, "Get away from me, Satan, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men." 20Scholium20 13.
