he urged him to be present and to hold a synod. 8.16.2 And Severian of Gabala, not yet having been released from his former grief, cooperated and assisted in these things. But whether John was led to this speech just as it happened, or, as some say, because he suspected that the empress had persuaded Epiphanius to plot against him, 8.16.3 I cannot say for certain. Not long after, Theophilus was present in Chalcedon of the Bithynians and other bishops of many cities, some urged by Theophilus, and others summoned by the emperor's command. And they came together with the greatest eagerness, both those in Asia who had been deprived of their episcopacy by John and whoever else from other places was hostile to him. And already from Egypt 8.16.4 ships, which Theophilus was awaiting, had arrived in Chalcedon. When all had come together in the same place here and were deliberating how the undertaking against John might proceed according to their wishes, Cyrinus, who at that time presided over the church in Chalcedon, and perhaps favoring Theophilus on account of their kinship (for he was an Egyptian) and being otherwise at variance with John, reviled him greatly. 8.16.5 But swift justice seemed to pursue him for these insults. For Maruthas from Mesopotamia, who was with the bishops, unwillingly stepped on one of his feet. And being in pain, he no longer crossed over to Constantinople with the other priests, although he seemed to be necessary for the plots against John. 8.16.6 After these things, being in a bad way, his leg was often amputated by the physicians; for gangrene set in and spread over his whole body, so that the other foot also endured the same thing by the transmission of the affliction. But not much later he ended his life in agony. 8.17.1 But when Theophilus crossed over, none of the clergy in Constantinople met him; for he was already clearly hostile to the bishop. But the Alexandrian seafaring men, who happened to be in the city from the other ships and especially from the grain ships, gathered together and eagerly received him with acclamations. 8.17.2 But passing by the church he went to a royal house, in which it had been prepared for him to stay. And when he knew that many were hostile to John and ready to accuse him, having arranged the other matters as it seemed good to him, 8.17.3 he came to the Oak. This is a suburb of Chalcedon, now named after Rufinus the consular, in which there is a palace and a very great church, which Rufinus himself built in honor of Peter and Paul the apostles and named it an apostoleion after them; and nearby he settled monks who filled the clergy of the church. 8.17.4 Having come together here, Theophilus, along with the other bishops, made no mention of the books of Origen, but called the monks from Scetis to repentance, promising neither to bear a grudge nor to do them harm. But when the partisans of Theophilus shouted at them to ask for pardon and pretended to beseech the synod on their behalf, the monks were disturbed and, thinking it was necessary to do this while many bishops were sitting in judgment—this indeed is their custom to say even when they are wronged—8.17.5 they said, "Forgive." And when Theophilus readily made a truce and restored communion to them, the investigation of the injustices concerning Scetis was dissolved. This I think would not have happened, if Dioscorus and Ammonius had been present with the other monks. For the one, having already died earlier, was buried 8.17.6 in the church named after Mocius the martyr. But Ammonius, just as the synod was being prepared, fell sick in his body; and having crossed over to the Oak, he was more grievously afflicted by the disease and not long after ended his life; and by the nearby monks, where indeed he lies, he was deemed worthy of a splendid burial. But Theophilus, when he learned of it, is said to have wept and to have said to all, that there was no monk of his time like Ammonius, even if he had been the cause of trouble for him. 8.17.7 Nevertheless, this also proceeded according to his will.
