and having become as I am; But if I become wholly incorruptible from a corruptible state, having been joined to the incorruptible, how could I not perceive it, how could I not see by experience itself and know that I have become what I was not? For to say that God, being united to men, does not impart to them the divine incorruptibility, but rather is dragged down with them into their corruption, (275) he who says this dogmatizes the destruction of the indestructible and blasphemes and falls completely away from life itself. But if this is impossible, accept rather the other view and hasten to partake of incorruptibility before the end. God is the light, and we are in darkness, or to speak more truly, we ourselves are the darkness; for God will not shine elsewhere, do not be deceived, except only in those souls to which He is united before the end; but to the others, even if the preachers should shine, as I have said, He will appear to them as an utterly unapproachable fire, and He will test the work of each, what kind it is, and again He will be separated from them as unworthy, and they will receive a fitting punishment. Nevertheless, both here and there, He alone is the light of souls, while we are darkness, having un-illuminated souls; if, therefore, the light of souls is united to my soul, will it be extinguished and become darkness, or will my soul, having been illuminated, become as the light? For the light, when it is kindled, immediately puts the darkness to flight, and yet that is the work of sensible light. But if the light, having been produced, works such things for you and illuminates your eyes and gladdens your soul and grants you to see what you did not see before, what will not its Creator do, shining in the soul, He who said "Let there be light," and it was immediately brought forth? What, then, do you think He will be able to effect in the soul that is illumined, if He shines intellectually in the heart or in the mind like lightning or like a great sun? Will He not indeed illuminate it and grant it to know Him in precise knowledge, who He is? Yes, truly thus it happens, thus it is accomplished, (276) thus is revealed the grace of the Spirit, and through Him and in Him the Son with the Father; and it sees them, as it is possible to see, and then the things concerning them from them ineffably
