to be ranked as the last member of all in the fullness of your holy church. 278 {1To the Lavra of Saint Chariton}1 To the God-honored, beloved and spiritual father, the lord abbot of the great lavra of our all-blessed holy father Chariton, and to the venerable fathers under him, Theodore, least presbyter and abbot of the Stoudites. Since the receipt of the letters was beyond expectation, I will cry out in wonder: "4Whence is this to me, that I, the humble one, should be worthy to write to you, my holy fathers?"5 For behold how this most grievous persecution has overtaken us on account of our sins, the report of which has surely reached even to you. I, the humble one, was considering and investigating how and through what person I might be able to lament to you, the holy ones, the terrible things that have happened to us, for no other reason than to call your holy souls to sympathy, to support us through prayers, it being clear that you know how to suffer with us according to the apostolic teaching, if indeed we are all the body of Christ and members in part. And as I was already considering these things, suddenly the letter-carrier also appeared, having come from there, and he is a spiritual son of mine and very faithful. How then was I, the sinner, not to be astonished at the godsend, and how was I not to give fitting thanks to the Lord my God? But before I tell of the painful things, I, the humble one, will express my longing for you. Rejoice, O most blessed fathers, inhabitants of the holy land, the golden race, most proven in faith and all-conquerors of the passions; rejoice, renowned assembly of Christ, workers of the Lord's commandments and imitators of the godlike life of the sojourn in paradise; rejoice, chosen city of God, if indeed the Lord is in your midst, being served through the undertaking of good works. I wished to behold your divine region with my own eyes and to touch your sacred footprints, to see the holy precinct, to venerate the divine ground, to inspect each place, where the saint of God, who was eponymously filled with graces, contended both as a martyr and as an ascetic, and where his sacred body is entombed, the true treasure of virtues, the citizen of the desert and light of the world, whose precious seed has not failed nor will it fail until the consummation of the age. If only I had seen these things and embraced the dust as if it were alive; would that I had been led also to the other tombs of the saints, being sanctified from the sight alone. But since I have praised these things briefly, come, let me also narrate the things full of pain. Another king arose, says the holy writ somewhere, who knew not Joseph. Such then is our Pharaoh, O most holy ones, not ignorant of Joseph, but denying the master who bought him; for it is clear that as he who rejects his icon rejects him, so also he has rejected the Theotokos and every saint. For being of a negative nature, he could not bear not to include all the members along with the head, so that only his own image might be displayed by a Nebuchadnezzarian decree. Hence the desolation of all the churches of God, with every venerable icon being made to disappear everywhere; hence the burning of sacred offerings, in which there was an icon, and of books, in which anything was said about it; hence the demand for written professions of impiety and participation in the godless communion through much searching and investigation, so that no man might be left unconsumed; for one of two things is necessary, either to worship the golden image or to be subjected to the evil flame of tortures. And yet the unbending are few in number. Who are these? Our holy patriarch, hierarchs and priests, monks and nuns; for the profligate countenance was not ashamed to inflict scourgings even on these. How could I clearly describe the afflictions, the imprisonments, the bonds, the starvations, the exiles, the inflictions, the deaths (since the trial extends even to this), the flights into the mountains, the hiding in caves and holes of the earth? Ἀλλ' ἐπεὶ ταῦτα ἐξ ὀλίγου μοι ὕμνηται, φέρε διηγήσωμαι καὶ τὰ ὀδύνης ἔμπλεα. ἀνέστη βασιλεὺς ἕτερος, φησί που τὸ ἱερὸν γράμμα, ὃς οὐκ ᾔδει τὸν Ἰωσήφ. τοιοῦτος δὴ οὖν ὁ ἡμέτερος Φαραώ, ὦ ἁγιώτατοι, οὐ τὸν Ἰωσὴφ ἀγνοῶν, ἀλλὰ τὸν ἀγοράσαντα αὐτὸν δεσπότην ἀρνούμενος· δῆλον γὰρ ὡς ὁ ἀθετῶν αὐτοῦ τὴν εἰκόνα αὐτὸν ἀθετεῖ, οὕτω καὶ τὴν Θεοτόκον καὶ πάντα ἅγιον ἠθέτησεν. οὐ γὰρ ἔφερεν, φύσις ὢν ἀρνητική, μὴ οὐχὶ τῇ κεφαλῇ συμπεριελεῖν καὶ τὰ μέλη πάντα, ἵνα μόνη ἡ αὐτοῦ εἰκὼν ἐμφανίζηται Ναβουχοδονοσορικῷ δόγματι. ἐντεῦθεν ἐρήμωσις πασῶν τῶν ἐκκλησιῶν τοῦ θεοῦ, ἀφανιζομένης πανταχοῦ πάσης σεπτῆς εἰκόνος· ἐντεῦθεν ἔμπρησις ἱερῶν ἀναθημάτων, ἐν οἷς εἰκών, καὶ βίβλων, ἐν αἷς περὶ αὐτῆς τι λεκτόν· ἐντεῦθεν τὰ τῆς ἀσεβείας χειρόγραφα ἀπαιτούμενα καὶ ἡ μέθεξις τῆς ἀθέου κοινωνίας διὰ πολλῆς ἐκζητήσεως καὶ ἐρεύνης, ὡς μὴ ὑπολειφθῆναι ἀνάλωτον πάντα ἄνθρωπον· δυοῖν γὰρ θάτερον ἀνάγκη, ἢ προσκυνῆσαι τῇ εἰκόνι τῇ χρυσῇ ἢ τῇ πονηρᾷ φλογὶ τῶν βασάνων ὑποβληθῆναι. καὶ ὅμως εὐαρίθμητοι οἱ ἀκαμπεῖς. τίνες οὗτοι; ὁ ἱερὸς ἡμῶν πατριάρχης, ἱεράρχαι τε καὶ ἱερεῖς, μονασταὶ καὶ μονάζουσαι· οὐδὲ γὰρ ἡ πόρνη ὄψις ᾐδέσθη καὶ μέχρι τούτων τὰς μάστιγας ἐπαφεῖναι. πῶς ἂν ἐναργῶς παραστήσαιμι τὰ θλίψεις, τὰς φυλακάς, τοὺς δεσμούς, τὰς λιμοκτονήσεις, τὰς ἐξορίας, τὰς ἐπαγωγάς, τοὺς θανάτους (ἐπεὶ καὶ μέχρι τοῦδε ἡ πεῖρα), τὰς ἐν ὄρεσι φυγαδείας, τὰς ἐν σπηλαίοις καὶ ὀπαῖς τῆς γῆς κατακρύψεις; Ἀβδιοὺ ὁ
