Perform prayers at dawn and at the third hour and at the sixth and at the ninth and in the evening and at cock-crow. At dawn, giving thanks, because the Lord has given you light, by making the night pass and bringing on the day. At the third, because at it the Lord received sentence from Pilate. At the sixth, because at it He was crucified. At the ninth, because all things were shaken when the Master was crucified, shuddering at the audacity of the impious Jews, not bearing the Lord's outrage. And in the evening giving thanks, because He has given you the night for rest from the daily toils. And at the cry of the cocks because the hour proclaims the good news of the coming of the day for the working of the works of light. If it is not possible to go forth in the church because of the unbelievers, you shall hold an assembly at home, O bishop, so that a pious person may not enter into a church of the impious; for it is not the place that sanctifies the man, but the man the place. But if the impious have taken possession of the place, you must flee from it because it has been defiled by them; for as holy priests sanctify, so the accursed defile. But if it is not possible to assemble either at home or in the church, let each one by himself sing psalms, read, pray, or even two or three together; “For where there are,” says the Lord, “two or three gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” Let a believer not pray with a catechumen, not even at home; for it is not right for the one who has been initiated to be polluted with the uninitiated. Let a pious person not pray together with a heretic, not even at home; “For what fellowship has light with darkness?” A believing man or woman joined to slaves, let them either desist or be cast out. And I, James, brother of Christ according to the flesh, but a servant as of God the only-begotten Son, and ordained bishop of Jerusalem by Christ Himself and the apostles, say these things. When evening has come, you shall gather the Church, O bishop; and after the vesper psalm has been said, the deacon shall bid prayer for the catechumens and the energumens and those to be illuminated and those in penitence, as we have said before. And after they have been dismissed, the deacon shall say: As many as are believers, let us pray to the Lord. And after he has made the bidding for the first prayer, he shall say: Save us and raise us up, O God, through Your Christ. Having risen, let us ask for the mercies of the Lord and His compassions, the angel who is over
