a prophet, while still being a captain of Ahab, when Jezebel was murdering, is said to have hidden the sons of the prophets by fifties in two caves, whom he also fed; but here if someone should be discovered having hidden even just one, [he is] in great danger, but indeed even in secret, fleeing the impious communion, or guarding an icon or a book containing the things concerning it. The mouths of the pious within are silent, the blasphemous tongue is let loose, the great mystery of the economy is mocked. Now, it says, the Lord has spoken peace to his people, and to his saints, and to those who turn their heart to him, He who in the beginning said to his own disciples: Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you. Now, it says, the abominations of Hellenic polytheism have been removed from the midst, with the apostle crying from the beginning, an idol is nothing in the world; now, it says, the church has been cleansed, which long ago the same apostle declared to not have spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but to be holy and blameless; now, they say, the light has shone upon the Christians, who were held in the gloom of ignorance, to whom from above and from the beginning Christ said, I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness. Do you see, holy brothers, the apostasy, which must come first, as the apostle says? Already before our eyes we see the entrances of the Antichrist. We have failed, we are consumed; the bellows have failed, all hope is driven away as far as man is concerned. But groan for us, O most compassionate ones, as fellow members of the body, stretch out a hand of intercession as lovers of your brothers. Our affairs are made more barbarous than yours there. We have already become like Sodom and we have already been made like Gomorrah. For this reason, therefore, we the humble also cried out to your holiness, as with one mouth of all the brothers who suffer with us; for we know that your righteous prayer is powerful in its working, so that by its propitiation the shattering of the heretical sword may cease, with the Lord leading our church also back to peaceful orthodoxy. And so that you too may know, O venerable ones, in part, what the impious dogmas of the godless are, I have sent along with this letter these things in notebooks, which I, the unlearned one, thought to refute, having been urged on by pious men. And I ask to be examined by your divine sagacity and for me to receive forgiveness for my faults, and to be remembered in your prayers that incline to God, and indeed also to be counted as the last member of all in the fullness of your holy church. 279 {1To the monks in the holy city, Isaac and Arsenius}1 It is dear to us, the humble, to address every father of the holy land, having been prospered to send one of our beloved brothers to those parts, not least to you, most holy fathers, whose company for a short time was so lovingly implanted in our humble heart, as to be unforgettable in good remembrances because of the goodness in all things of both your ways and your words. For where there is humility, there is every good achievement, by which your holy pair, being fragrant, not only then, but indeed even until now sends forth to us a sweet-smelling fragrance of holiness. Such were you, above all who visited from the East, you were seen to be praiseworthy, having left behind good memorials for those who love you. And for what reason the sending of the brother is, he himself will teach, but I think it is not unknown to you either, while you were still in Byzantium when the matter was in turmoil. Therefore the ruler kindled the heretical flame against the holy icons, so as to set fire to the whole church and to destroy almost every person who was led into impiety, having become another Ahab or Nebuchadnezzar; who by the destruction of every holy icon set up his own alone, which whoever is not willing to venerate is immediately handed over to the flame of torments. To speak of the details I consider superfluous, since they are contained in the letters to your most holy patriarch, and especially since the brother is able to report them, but this I, your least brother, ask, on account of the in the Lord
