the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. 7.2.13 and when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. And being warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.” 7.2.14 I have set forth all these things to show what was done at the birth of our Savior in Bethlehem, providing clear proofs that he is the one indicated by the prophecy. 7.2.15 And to this day the inhabitants of the place, according to a tradition that has come down to them from their fathers, bear witness to the account for those who come to Bethlehem to inquire about the places, confirming the truth by showing the cave in which the virgin, having given birth, laid the infant, concerning which the prophecy says: “Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth: then the remnant of his brethren shall return.” 7.2.16 Accordingly, here too it indicates that she who is giving birth is the one named virgin and prophetess in the preceding prophecies, who would bring forth Emmanuel and the “angel of great counsel.” For until her times and the one born of her, the affairs of the former people also continued, a deadline having been given to them “until the time of her who is giving birth,” that is, until the wondrous birth of the one born of the virgin, after whom their kingdom was indeed taken away. And “the remnant of their brethren” would be those who have believed in the Christ of God: the apostles and disciples and evangelists of our Savior, who, having returned, the Lord himself is said to shepherd, not as before through angels or through human servants, but himself through himself, so that for this reason they were magnified “to the end of the earth.” For they were magnified when “their sound went out into all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.” 7.2.17 It is also clear what a great “flock” of rational and human sheep was gathered to the Lord throughout the whole earth by his apostles; which the Lord himself, through himself, being both shepherd and Lord of the flock, is said to watch over and shepherd “in strength,” so that the sheep, guarded “with a mighty hand and a high arm” by the Master and Shepherd, might suffer no terrible thing from the wild and harsh beasts lying in wait for them. 7.2.18 And so the things concerning the proclaimed God’s birth in Bethlehem and his coming forth from there are of this manner. But the visit of the Lord and Shepherd himself from heaven to men I have already previously cited from this very prophet at hand, through which he said: “Hear, all ye people; hearken, O earth, and all that therein is: and the Lord will be a witness for you, the Lord from his holy house. For, behold, the Lord, the Lord, cometh forth out of his place, and will come down,” and so forth. 7.2.19 To which he added, saying: “For the transgression of Jacob is all this, and for the sin of the house of Israel.” And it is clear also from the subsequent words of the same prophet, that not only because of the impieties of the Jewish nation did the Lord make his descent from heaven, but also for the salvation and calling of all the gentiles. For he adds in sequence: “And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord shall be manifest, and many peoples shall hasten to it, and many nations shall go, and shall say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord.” 7.2.20 Therefore, after this, having proclaimed that the one from before the ages would come forth from Bethlehem, he says that he will rule not only Israel, but all people at once even to the “ends of the earth.” For he says: “And the Lord shall stand and see, and shepherd his flock in strength, and they shall subsist in the glory of the name of the Lord their God; because now they shall be magnified to the ends of the earth, and there shall be

ἀστήρ, ὃν εἶδον ἐν τῇ ἀνατολῇ, προῆγεν αὐτούς, ἕως ἐλθὼν ἔστη ἐπάνω οὗ ἦν τὸ παιδίον. ἰδόντες δὲ τὸν ἀστέρα ἐχάρησαν χαρὰν μεγάλην σφόδρα. 7.2.13 καὶ ἐλθόντες εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν εἶδον τὸ παιδίον μετὰ Μαρίας τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ, καὶ πεσόντες προσεκύνησαν αὐτῷ. καὶ ἀνοίξαντες τοὺς θησαυροὺς αὐτῶν προσήνεγκαν αὐτῷ δῶρα, χρυσὸν καὶ λίβανον καὶ σμύρναν. καὶ χρηματισθέντες κατ' ὄναρ μὴ ἀνακάμψαι πρὸς Ἡρώδην, δι' ἄλλης ὁδοῦ ἀνεχώρησαν εἰς τὴν χώραν αὐτῶν.» 7.2.14 Ὅλα δὲ ταῦτα ἐξεθέμην εἰς παράστασιν τῶν πεπραγμένων ἐπὶ τῇ ἐν Βηθλεὲμ γενέσει τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν, ἐναργῆ τεκμήρια παρέχοντα αὐτὸν εἶναι τὸν ὑπὸ τῆς προφητείας δηλούμενον. 7.2.15 καὶ εἰς δεῦρο δὲ οἱ τὸν τόπον οἰκοῦντες, ὡς ἐκ πατέρων εἰς αὐτοὺς κατελθούσης παραδόσεως, τοῖς τῶν τόπων ἱστορίας χάριν εἰς τὴν Βηθλεὲμ ἀφικνουμένοις μαρτυροῦσι τῷ λόγῳ, πιστούμενοι τὴν ἀλήθειαν διὰ τῆς τοῦ ἄντρου δείξεως, ἐν ᾧ τεκοῦσα ἡ παρθένος κατατέθειται τὸ βρέφος, ἐφ' οἷς ἡ προφητεία φησίν· «διὰ τοῦτο δώσει αὐτοὺς ἕως καιροῦ τικτούσης τέξεται, καὶ οἱ ἐπίλοιποι τῶν ἀδελφῶν αὐτῶν ἐπιστρέψουσιν». 7.2.16 ἀκολούθως δὲ κἀνταῦθα τίκτουσαν δηλοῖ τὴν ἐν ταῖς πρόσθεν προφητείαις παρθένον ὠνομασμένην καὶ προφήτιδα τὴν τὸν Ἐμμανουὴλ καὶ τὸν τῆς «μεγάλης βουλῆς ἄγγελον» ἀποτεξομένην. ἕως γὰρ τῶν ταύτης καιρῶν καὶ τοῦ ἐξ αὐτῆς ἀποτεχθέντος καὶ τὰ τοῦ προτέρου λαοῦ συνειστήκει, δοθείσης αὐτοῖς προθεσμίας «ἕως καιροῦ τικτούσης», τοῦτ' ἔστιν ἕως τῆς παραδόξου γενέσεως τοῦ ἐκ τῆς παρθένου τεχθέντος, μεθ' ὃν ἤρθη μὲν αὐτῶν ἡ βασιλεία. «οἱ» δὲ «ἐπίλοιποι τῶν ἀδελφῶν αὐτῶν» οὗτοι ἂν εἶεν οἱ εἰς τὸν Χριστὸν τοῦ θεοῦ πεπιστευκότες ἀπόστολοι καὶ μαθηταὶ καὶ εὐαγγελισταὶ τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν, οὓς ἐπιστρέψαντας αὐτὸς ὁ κύριος ποιμαίνειν λέγεται, οὐ καθὼς τὸ πρὶν δι' ἀγγέλων ἢ διὰ θεραπόντων ἀνθρώπων, ἀλλ' αὐτὸς δι' ἑαυτοῦ, ὥστε διὰ τοῦτο μεγαλυνθῆναι αὐτοὺς «ἕως ἄκρου τῆς γῆς». ἐμεγαλύνθησαν γὰρ ὅτε «εἰς πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ἐξῆλθεν ὁ φθόγγος αὐτῶν, καὶ εἰς τὰ πέρατα τῆς οἰκουμένης τὰ ῥήματ' αὐτῶν». 7.2.17 πρόδηλον δὲ καὶ ὁποῖον μέγα «ποίμνιον» καθ' ὅλης τῆς γῆς ἐκ λογικῶν καὶ ἀνθρωπείων προβάτων τῷ κυρίῳ διὰ τῶν ἀποστόλων αὐτοῦ συνέστη· ὃ καὶ αὐτὸς ὁ κύριος δι' ἑαυτοῦ, ποιμὴν ὁμοῦ καὶ κύριος ὢν τῆς ποίμνης, ἐπόψεσθαι καὶ ποιμανεῖν «ἐν ἰσχύι» λέγεται, ὥστε «ἐν χειρὶ κραταιᾷ καὶ ἐν βραχίονι ὑψηλῷ» πρὸς τοῦ δεσπότου καὶ ποιμένος φυλαττόμενα τὰ πρόβατα μηδέν τι παθεῖν δεινὸν πρὸς τῶν ἐφεδρευόντων αὐτοῖς ἀγρίων καὶ ἀπηνῶν θηρίων. 7.2.18 Καὶ τὰ μὲν περὶ τῆς ἐν Βηθλεὲμ καὶ τῆς ἀπὸ ταύτης προόδου τοῦ προκηρυττομένου θεοῦ τοῦτον ἔχειν τὸν τρόπον. τὴν δ' ἐξ οὐρανῶν εἰς ἀνθρώπους ἐπιδημίαν αὐτοῦ τοῦ κυρίου καὶ ποιμένος ἤδη καὶ πρότερον ἐξ αὐτοῦ τοῦ μετὰ χεῖρας προφήτου παρατέθειμαι, δι' ὧν ἔλεγεν· «ἀκούσατε λαοὶ πάντες, καὶ προσεχέτω ἡ γῆ καὶ πάντες οἱ ἐν αὐτῇ, καὶ ἔσται κύριος ὑμῖν εἰς μαρτύριον, κύριος ἐξ οἴκου ἁγίου αὐτοῦ. διότι ἰδοὺ κύριος κύριος ἐκπορεύεται ἐκ τοῦ τόπου αὐτοῦ, καὶ καταβήσεται», καὶ τὰ ἑξῆς. 7.2.19 οἷς ἐπιλέγων ἔφασκεν· «δι' ἀσέβειαν Ἰακὼβ πάντα ταῦτα καὶ δι' ἁμαρτίαν οἴκου Ἰσραήλ». σαφὲς δὲ καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν ἑξῆς τοῦ αὐτοῦ προφήτου, ὅτι μὴ μόνον διὰ τὰς ἀσεβείας τοῦ Ἰουδαίων ἔθνους τὴν ἐξ οὐρανῶν ὁ κύριος πεποίητο κάθοδον, ἀλλὰ καὶ διὰ τὴν σωτηρίαν καὶ κλῆσιν τῶν ἐθνῶν ἁπάντων. ἐπιλέγει δ' οὖν ἑξῆς· «καὶ ἔσται ἐπ' ἐσχάτων τῶν ἡμερῶν ἐμφανὲς τὸ ὄρος κυρίου, καὶ σπεύσουσιν ἐπ' αὐτὸ λαοὶ πολλοί, καὶ πορεύσονται ἔθνη πολλά, καὶ ἐροῦσιν, δεῦτε ἀναβῶμεν εἰς τὸ ὄρος κυρίου». 7.2.20 διὸ καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα τὸν πρὸ αἰώνων ἀπὸ τῆς Βηθλεὲμ ἐξελεύσεσθαι ἀνακηρύξας, οὐκέτι τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ μόνου ἀλλὰ ἀθρόως πάντων ἀνθρώπων ἕως καὶ τῶν «ἄκρων τῆς γῆς» ἄρξειν αὐτόν φησιν. λέγει δ' οὖν· «καὶ στήσεται καὶ ὄψεται, καὶ ποιμανεῖ τὸ ποίμνιον αὐτοῦ ἐν ἰσχύϊ κύριος, καὶ ἐν τῇ δόξῃ τοῦ ὀνόματος κυρίου θεοῦ αὐτῶν ὑπάρξουσι· διότι νῦν μεγαλυνθήσονται ἕως ἄκρων τῆς γῆς, καὶ ἔσται
