still more firmly establishing his equality with the Father by saying: I and the Father will come, and we will make our home with him. What he says, therefore, is this: I have not come to do anything else than what the Father also wills; not having any will of my own apart from that of the Father; for all that is the Father's is mine, and mine is his. If, therefore, the things of the Father and the Son are common, he rightly says: Not that I may do my own will. But he did not speak thus here, but reserves this for the end. For the lofty things, as I said, he for the time conceals and overshadows, and wishes to show that if he had said, "This is my will," they would have despised him. He says, therefore, "And I cooperate with that will," wishing to strike them the more, as if he said: What do you think? That you provoke me by disbelieving? You are provoking my Father; For this is the will of him who sent me, that of all that he has given me, I should lose nothing. He shows here that he does not need their service, nor did he come for his own sake, but for their salvation, not for the honor from them. Which he also says in his former discourse, "I do not receive glory from men;" and again, "These things I say, that you may be saved." For he strives throughout to show this, that he came for their salvation. And he says that he prepares glory for the Father, so that he might seem beyond suspicion. And that he spoke thus for this reason, he revealed this more clearly through what follows. "For he who seeks," he says, "his own will, seeks his own glory; but he who seeks the glory of him who sent him, is true, and there is no unrighteousness in him." "And this is the will of the Father, that everyone who sees the Son, and believes in him, should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day." Why does he continually bring up the resurrection? So that they may not judge God's providence by present things alone; so that even if they do not enjoy things here, they may not on this account become more careless, but may hope for the things to come, and so that, because they are not punished at present, they may not despise him, but may look for another life. 4. But even if they gained nothing, let us strive to gain from continually discoursing about the resurrection. And if we wish to be greedy, or to seize, or to do anything amiss, let us immediately call to mind that day, and picture the judgment seat; and this thought will restrain the inappropriate impulse more forcefully than any bridle. And let us say always both to others and to ourselves: "There is a resurrection, and a fearsome judgment seat awaits us." And if we see someone acting haughtily, and puffed up with present goods, let us say the same thing, showing that all these things remain here; and if we see another grieving and despairing, let us say the same to him, declaring that painful things will have an end. 59.256 And if we see one who is lazy and dissolute, let us chant the same thing again, declaring that it is necessary to give an account for laziness. This saying is sufficient to heal our soul more than any medicine. For there is a resurrection, and the resurrection is at the doors, not far off nor distant. "For yet a little while," says Paul, "he who is coming will come, and will not delay;" and again, "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ;" that is, both the evil and the good, so that the former may be ashamed before all, and the latter may again be made more glorious before all. For just as those who judge here both punish the wicked and honor the good publicly, so indeed will it be there; so that for the one, the shame may be greater, and for the other, the splendor may become more manifest. Let us therefore picture these things to ourselves each day. If we constantly ponder these things, none of the present and ephemeral matters will be able to hold us. "For the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal." Continually, therefore, let us say both to ourselves and to one another: "There is a resurrection, and judgment, and an accounting for deeds." And as many as believe in fate, this

Τοῦτο δέ ἐστι τὸ θέλημα τοῦ Πατρὸς, ἵνα πᾶς ὁ θεωρῶν τὸν Υἱὸν, καὶ πιστεύων εἰς αὐτὸν, ἔχῃ ζωὴν αἰώνιον, καὶ ἀναστήσω αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ. Καθάπερ γὰρ οἱ ἐνταῦθα δικάζοντες καὶ πονηροὺς κολάζουσι, καὶ ἀγαθοὺς τιμῶσι δημοσίᾳ· οὕτω δὴ καὶ ἐκεῖ γίνεται· ὥστε τοῖς μὲν τὴν αἰσχύνην μείζω, τοῖς δὲ τὴν λαμπρότητα γενέσθαι περιφανεστέραν.
