The first was tonsured for Constantine, but the third refused. Therefore he is joined to the second, who was called Zoe, and thus he is proclaimed emperor, having ruled for 5 years. And at that time he makes a beginning of good things; for he commanded that 80 pounds of gold be given each year from the imperial 581 treasuries to the great church of God. Having also abolished the *allelengyon*, he both empties the prisons, and does many other such things. In the month of October, on the 31st, there was a falling of a star, making its course from west to east, on which day there was also a not insignificant defeat of the Roman army, when Michael Spondyles was strategos of great Antioch. And there was also a flood of rains, lasting until the month of March itself, with the rivers overflowing and the lowlands turning into a sea, so that almost all the animals and the crops sown in the earth were drowned, and from this a terrible famine followed in the coming time. The misfortune of the Roman army, however, happened in Syria. At that very time also something monstrous happened in the theme of the Thrakesians near the foothills of Mount Kouzinas, where there is a spring of clear water, by which was heard a certain pitiful voice with wailings and woes and a lamentation similar to the weeping of women. And this did not happen once or twice, but from the month of March until June itself, by day and night. But when some went to spy out the place in which the voice was resounding, the wailing shifted elsewhere. And this, as it seems, foretold the misfortune which was about to happen to the 582 Romans in Coele-Syria. For after the emperor Nikephoros Phokas had restored most of the cities of Syria and Phoenicia to the Romans, and John after him had secured what had been captured and extended his rule even as far as Damascus, since the emperor after them, being hindered by civil wars, and campaigning throughout against the Bulgarians, was not strong enough to secure the affairs of the east well; for having arrived there at that time in appearance only, he then returned, having the persistent preoccupation of subjugating the race of the Bulgarians. Therefore from this, those in the east, having seized the opportunity of impunity, intended to seek their own freedom. For this reason indeed, the apostasy was being planned in the time of Basil, but it was hidden. But while Constantine was ruling the empire carelessly, the Saracens, with no one to hinder them, fearlessly sacked the fortresses in the cities, having made many raids everywhere. So with matters being thus, the emperor sets out against the Saracens. He comes to Philomelion. Ambassadors are sent to him from Beroia, begging for sympathy and accepting their former servitude and tribute payment. But Romanos, wishing to show something noble 583 in Syria, like the emperors before him, does not receive the ambassadors, but sets out against them, having neither considered the lack of water, nor that the Saracens themselves happen to be more irresistible in summer time on account of their custom. He engages with such men, and is defeated with a defeat of a kind that speech cannot describe. He returns to Antioch, with the army being afflicted by a stomach ailment and being distressed by thirst. The Saracens attack them again, and they made such destruction that even the emperor barely escaped. But the emperor, having bought the house of Triakontaphyllos, converted it into a monastery in the name of the Theotokos, on this pretext crushing his subjects and oppressing them in the transport of materials. And he also adorns the capitals of the columns of the Great Church and of the Blachernai with silver and gold. And after these things, the son of the ruler of Chalep, Amer, came to the emperor Romanos with many gifts, asking to renew the peace and the former
