and it will astonish me and with fear they minister, singing praises. For it is not possible for another God by nature to be produced, (281) equal in power to the creator nor of the same nature as him, for it is not at all possible for the created thing to become consubstantial with the creator. For how could the created ever be made equal to the uncreated? The created things are less than the one who is always the same and without beginning and uncreated; for you will testify that they are, and that they differ as much as a wagon and a saw from the one who made them. How then could a wagon learn about the one who made it? And how will a saw recognize the one who moves it, tell me, unless he gives knowledge to these things, unless the one who made them should implant sight, which is impossible for all created things? Therefore, no one among men at all, and no one among the angels has received the authority to give spirit to others or to provide them with life, but the Lord of all, alone having authority, alone having power, (282) being a fountain of life, produces living creatures, such as he will in any case, and he graciously gives to each, as an artisan, as a master, whatever he plans and wills, to whom be the glory and the power

καί ἐκπλήξει με καί φόβῳ ἀνυμνοῦντες λειτουργοῦσιν. Οὐκ ἐνδέχεται Θεόν γάρ ἄλλον φύσει παραχθῆναι (281) ἰσοδύναμον τοῦ κτίστου οὐδ᾿ ὁμοφυῆ ἐκείνου, οὐδέ δυνατόν γάρ ὅλως ὁμοούσιον τοῦ κτίστου τό κτιζόμενον γενέσθαι. Τῷ ἀκτίστῳ τό κτιστόν γάρ πῶς ποτε ἐξισωθείη; Τοῦ ἀεί ὡσαύτως ὄντος καί ἀνάρχου καί ἀκτίστου τά κτιζόμενα ἐλάττω˙ καί γάρ εἶναι μαρτυρήσεις καί τοσοῦτον διαφέρειν, ὅσον ἅμαξα καί πρίων τοῦ αὐτά τεκτηναμένου. Πῶς οὖν ἅμαξα τόν ταύτην τεκτηνάμενον ἐκμάθοι; Πῶς δέ πρίων τόν κινοῦντα ἐπιγνώσεται, εἰπέ μοι, εἰ μή τούτοις δώσει γνῶσιν, εἰ μή ὅρασιν ἐνθείη ὁ αὐτά κατασκευάσας, ὅ ἀδύνατον ὑπάρχει τοῦτο πᾶσι τοῖς κτισθεῖσιν; Οὐδείς ἀνθρώπων ὅλως οὖν, οὐδείς καί τῶν ἀγγέλων τοῦ διδόναι πνεῦμα ἄλλοις ἔλαβε τήν ἐξουσίαν ἤ ζωήν αὐτοῖς παρέχειν, ὁ δέ Κύριος τῶν πάντων ἔχων ἐξουσίαν μόνος, μόνος ἔχων δυναστείαν, (282) ὡς πηγή ζωῆς ὑπάρχων ἔμψυχα παράγει ζῷα, οἷα πάντως καί θελήσει, καί χαρίζεται ἑκάστῳ ὡς τεχνίτης, ὡς δεσπότης, ὅσα βούλεται καί θέλει, ᾧ ἡ δόξα καί τό κράτος
