shall grow old in 55.238 Hades; that is, it will grow weak. What he says is this: Not only here will they be easily subdued, with no one defending them, no one extending a hand, exposed to all, but also, what is more grievous, not even there will they have anyone standing by, and helping, and extending a hand, and consoling them in their punishment. Thus indeed neither were the wise virgins able to help the foolish, nor Abraham the rich man, nor Noah, and Job, and Daniel, their sons and daughters. For, 'It shall grow old,' is 'it will grow weak,' 'it will vanish.' For that which is growing old and aging, is near to vanishing. They were cast out from their glory. That which they most desired, for which they did and busied themselves with everything, so as even after death to enjoy much glory, through their wealth, through their buildings, through their tombs, through the names inscribed upon the tombs; even from this, he says, they will fall, which grieved them most while they were alive and learning these things. For such buildings are accusations of those who have departed. For even if the body is hidden in the earth, yet the stones send forth a voice, accusing them each day of their cruelty, of their shamelessness, proclaiming them the common enemies, always drawing passers-by to curses, and accusations, and slanders. What sort of glory is this, then, to leave behind an accuser who is not silent, but through sight opens the mouths of all, and makes a most vehement appeal against those who built them to all who see and pass by? What could be equal to this folly, when they do those things for which they are punished, for which they are shamed, for which they are accused, for which even after death they are dug up by many; for which there are curses for them, and slanders, and myriad accusations, both from those who were wronged, and those who were not wronged? But God will redeem my soul from the hand of Hades, when he receives me. Having spoken of the wages of the wicked, the rewards of sin, he also speaks of the prizes of the good; which it is his custom and that of other prophets to do, so as to discipline the hearer from both sides, both from the punishment of sins, and from the prizes of virtue. Their lot, then, he says, is such: dishonor, vain toil, folly, ridicule, shame, utter destruction, death, punishment, everlasting chastisement, vulnerability, having fallen from both glory and security, both in life and in death, being slandered, being accused, finding no consolation for their evils. But ours is entirely the opposite, deliverance from punishment, freedom of soul, security, glory, honor. For he hinted at all these things, saying: 'But God will redeem my soul from the hand of Hades, when he receives me'; here calling punishment Hades, those unbearable pains. And consider how great are the honors, not only in this, but also in what is brought on besides. For when he receives me, he says, then I shall see him more accurately than now. For now we walk by faith, not by sight, but then face to face. And with the soul being redeemed, the body also will share in the good things. Do not be afraid, when a man becomes rich, or 55.239 when the glory of his house is increased. Since these things are so, he says, why do you fear the present things? Why does poverty grieve you? Why do you fear the wealthy man? Have you heard about the resurrection, and the cessation of good things, and the punishment of the wicked? Why then do you henceforth fear the shadows? For those things are lasting and fixed; but these are like withering flowers. Wherefore also, leaving all other things, he has leaped upon the citadel of evils, the desire for wealth; for if this is thrown down, the others are also destroyed with it. 11. And how should I not be afraid, he says, of those who are so powerful? The dominion is temporary, the strength lasts for an hour, the prosperity passes by, money and wealth and such great honor imitate shadows and dreams; wherefore he also added: For in his dying he shall not take everything,

Τὰ μὲν οὖν ἐκείνων τοιαῦτα, φησίν· ἀτιμία, ματαιοπονία, ἄνοια, γέλως, αἰσχύνη, πανωλεθρία, θάνατος, τιμωρία, κόλασις διηνεκὴς, τὸ εὐεπηρέαστον, τὸ καὶ δόξης καὶ ἀσφαλείας ἐκπεπτωκέναι, καὶ ζῶντας καὶ τελευτῶντας, τὸ διαβάλλεσθαι, τὸ κατηγορεῖσθαι, τὸ μηδεμίαν εὑρίσκειν παραμυθίαν κακῶν. Τὰ δὲ ἡμέτερα τοὐναντίον ἅπαν, ἀπαλλαγὴ κολάσεως, ἐλευθερία ψυχῆς, ἀσφάλεια, δόξα, τιμή. Τούτων οὕτως ἐχόντων, φησὶ, τί δέδοικας τὰ παρόντα; τί σε λυπεῖ πενία; τί φοβῇ τὸν εὔπορον; Ἤκουσας τὰ περὶ τῆς ἀναστάσεως, καὶ τῆς τῶν ἀγαθῶν λήξεως, καὶ τῆς τῶν πονηρῶν τιμωρίας; Τί τοίνυν δέδοικας λοιπὸν τὰς σκιάς; Τὰ μὲν γὰρ μόνιμα καὶ πεπηγότα, ἐκεῖνα· ταῦτα δὲ, ἄνθεσι μαραινομένοις ἔοικε. ∆ιὸ καὶ πάντα τὰ ἄλλα ἀφεὶς, ἐπὶ τὴν ἀκρόπολιν τῶν κακῶν ἐπήδησε, τοῦ πλούτου τὴν ἐπιθυμίαν· ταύτης γὰρ καταβληθείσης, καὶ τὰ ἄλλα συγκαταλύεται. ιαʹ.
