this to be vomited forth by animals. Having thus prepared these things, and summoning Tatikios who had recently arrived from Antioch, he handed over such ships to him and named him a most illustrious head; but to Lantulph he entrusted the entire fleet, and appointed him megas doux as one most skilled in naval warfare. 11.10.3 So, leaving the great city in the passing month of April with the Roman fleet, they reached Samos, and mooring the ships to the land, they went out onto the mainland in order to secure them more safely by means of the safe ground. But having learned of the passage of the Pisan fleet, they too loosed the stern-cables and sped after them toward Kos. While the Pisans arrived there in the morning, these men arrived in the evening. Not having encountered the Pisans, they departed for Knidos, which is situated on the eastern mainland. Having arrived there, as they were missing their quarry, finding a few of the Pisans who had been left behind somewhere there, they inquired where the Pisan fleet had set out for; and they said, "Towards Rhodes." And immediately loosing the stern-cables, they quickly overtook them between Patara and Rhodes. When the Pisans saw them, they immediately formed a battle array and whetted not only their swords but also their hearts for the fight. When the Roman fleet came upon them, a certain Peloponnesian count called Perichytes, who knew expertly how to lie in naval ambush, as he saw them, propelling his own single-banked ship with its oars as fast as it could go, rushed against them. And passing through their midst like fire, he returned again to the Roman fleet. 11.10.4 However, the Roman fleet did not engage in the battle with the Pisans in an orderly manner, but attacked them swiftly and without formation. And Lantulph himself, approaching the Pisan ships first, launched the fire amiss and accomplished nothing more than scattering the fire. But the count called Eleemon, shamelessly attacking a very large ship at the stern, became entangled in its rudders and, not being able to sail away from there easily, would have been captured if he had not swiftly looked to his device and, releasing fire against them, did not miss his target. Then, swiftly moving his ship to the other side, he immediately set fire to three other very large barbarian ships. And since at the same time a squall of wind suddenly fell upon and disturbed the sea, and was shattering the ships and all but threatening to sink them (for the waves were roaring, the yard-arms were creaking, and the sails were being torn apart), the barbarians were terrified, partly because of the fire being hurled at them (for they were not accustomed to such devices or to a fire whose natural course is upwards, but which is sent wherever the sender wishes, often downwards and to either side), and partly because their minds were confused by the surging of the sea, they took to flight. 11.10.5 So much for the barbarians; but the Roman fleet ran aground on a certain small island called Seutlos, in this way. At daybreak they departed from there and moored at Rhodes. So disembarking from the ships and bringing forth as many as they had managed to capture, including Bohemond's own nephew, they terrified them, as if they were about to sell them all for a price or to slaughter them. But when they saw that they were undaunted by this and held being sold for nothing, they immediately made them fodder for the sword. 11.10.6 But those who were left of the Pisan fleet turned their attention to plundering the nearby islands and Cyprus; where Eumathios Philokales happened upon them and rushed against them. But those around the ships, seized by cowardice, not even caring for the people who had gone out from their ships for the sake of plunder, but leaving the majority on the island, thus in disorder loosing their stern-cables, they sailed away to Laodicea
