beating against the house. Blessed is he who is founded on the rock of Christ, who will not be dismayed, but will overcome and will conquer with Christ and will dance eternally with the martyrs. Therefore, offenses must come, so that the approved of Christ may be made manifest. Show the letter, then, if possible, to the confessor brothers, and also to those not locked up; for blessed are they also, who are persecuted and endure the persecution under the protection of God. But as for us, there is nothing to say, except only this, that a man of the general came and, having replaced the guard, sought to see us; and when he saw us, he neither did obeisance, though we made a sign of reverence through the small window, nor did he greet us, but as soon as he saw us he went away. If anything else happens, time will tell. Let the ˉη take the letters which the letter-carrier brings, and let him go on his way in the Lord. But as for you, after the emperor has gone on campaign, then come, bringing us news of what has happened and of the health of the brothers. May you too be saved, my beloved child, in the Lord, unharmed by the constant temptations. The blessed brothers who have fallen asleep in the Lord will pray for us. 298 {1To John the abbot}1 The removal of our brother, the most God-beloved archbishop, from there, then our not receiving copies of what we sent to your fatherly holiness, the absence of our humble letters, and thirdly the fact that we are now held securely, has not given us opportunity for your most pleasant communication by letter. But now, as the Lord has prospered our way, we both write and greet you most genuinely, as if taking you before our face in the contemplation of the mind and embracing you with our spiritual and holy desire; for indeed your God-loving person is not outside our humble soul, but is greatly cherished and loved and ever-present. I praise your love of God, I glorify your self-control, your love towards your neighbor, your simplicity, your cheerfulness, your approachability; for you have not only these things, but even more than what I have said, by the grace of Christ. Now therefore I also praise your steadfastness in the confession of Christ, and indeed it was not right for you who have achieved so many good things to be without such great praise, but rather to be adorned with it as with a crown upon the rest. But if the persecution is prolonged, let us not be surprised, father; the present times are not yet as they were in the past. We must be tried still more, if indeed we desire to be in the footsteps of our holy fathers. Nevertheless I believe that the Lord will not delay to make a visitation, only if we preserve our thankfulness to him in our afflictions. Therefore, write to us yourself, I ask, and also pray for us, the unworthy, to be preserved, so that we may have occasions to write back. And I send many greetings to those who are worthy to serve your holiness. 299 {1To Nicolas the manciple}1 That I remember you, good friend, behold, the letter is a witness; and how is it possible to forget you, who are so exceedingly well disposed towards us, or rather, towards Christ? What is this? That in the midst of the fire of the heretics you remain unburned, having orthodoxy springing up in your heart, in which may you be preserved until the end. This is the first and greatest thing; second, that our brothers who come there find you a harbor of salvation for all from the surging heresy; in which, being refreshed by your friendly reception in all things, they come back to us. With how much gladness, then, does this fill us, and what a reward of divine ministration will be reckoned to you, if indeed he says, "he who receives you receives me." Therefore, brother, you receive Christ through the brothers and give him rest; and he will receive you into the kingdom of heaven in return for your hosting him here through the brothers.
