prepare that we may eat the Passover.” 20Refutation20 ˉξˉα. A cloud of arrows against you in one testimony the saying contains, O Marcion. For if he commands that the Passover be prepared for him to eat, and the Passover was celebrated before Christ suffered, it certainly had its establishment from the law. And with Christ conducting himself according to the law, it was clear that he came not to abolish the law, but to fulfill it. And if a king does not abolish the law, the ordinance in the law is not unholy nor forbidden to the king. And since the law is holy and the ordinance is acknowledged, if a king should add anything to the ordinance for the sake of a greater gift, the splendor of the addition comes by his authority. And since the legislation and the gift by addition are from one and the same, it is plain and clear to everyone that the one who made the addition does not oppose the law. It has been shown, therefore, that the old covenant is not something opposed to the gos2.149 pel nor to the succession of the prophets. But against yourself, O Marcion, you have brought the refutation in many ways, or rather, being compelled by truth itself. For the old Passover was nothing but the sacrifice of a sheep and the eating of its meat, and the partaking of a living creature with unleavened bread. And who compelled you not to completely destroy the refutation against you, if not, as I said, truth itself? For what you abominate as flesh-eating, the Lord Jesus ate with his disciples, celebrating the Passover according to the law. And do not say that what he was about to celebrate as a mystery, this he named in advance, saying: I desire to eat this Passover with you. For so that the truth might shame you in every way, he does not perform the mystery at the beginning, so that you cannot deny it, but says: after supper, having taken these things and these things, and he said, this is these things and these things, and he left no room for deceit. For he showed that after eating the Passover according to the Jews, that is, after supper, he came to the mystery. 20Scholium20 ˉξˉβ. “And he reclined, and the twelve apostles with him, and he said: With desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.” 20Refutation20 ˉξˉβ. The Savior reclined, O Marcion, and the twelve apostles with him. If he reclined and they reclined with him, one word cannot have one meaning and then another, even if there is a difference in worthiness and manner. For either you will grant that the twelve also reclined in appearance, or that he himself, having flesh in truth, truly reclined. And “with desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer,” in order to show that the Passover before his passion was prefigured in the law and made the certainty of his passion and more perfectly summoned; and indicating, as the holy apostle also says, that “the law has become our 2.150 tutor unto Christ.” But if the law is a tutor unto Christ, the law is not alien to Christ. 20Scholium20 ˉξˉγ. He cut out “For I say to you, I will not eat of it from now on, until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 20Refutation20 ˉξˉγ. This he removed and manipulated, so that, forsooth, he might not make there to be food or drink in the kingdom of God; the brutish man not knowing that spiritual and heavenly things can be a counterpart of earthly things, partaken of in a way that we do not know; for again the Savior testifies and says that “you will sit at my table, eating and drinking in the kingdom of heaven.” Or he cut these out again, so that, forsooth, he might make the things in the law have no place in the kingdom of heaven. Whence then were Elijah and Moses seen with him on the mountain in glory? But no one will be able to do anything against the truth. 20Scholium20 ˉξˉδ. He cut out “When I sent you, did you lack anything?” and what follows because of “and this which is written must be fulfilled: and he was numbered with the transgressors.” 20Refutation20 ˉξˉδ. Even if you should cut out the words, from the deed they are manifest
