Years 9. 9. 2. 1. 11. 20. In this year the impious emperor Leo began to speak of the destruction of the holy and venerable icons. And learning of this, Gregory, the pope of Rome, withheld the taxes of Italy and Rome, having written a dogmatic letter to Leo, that it was not proper for an emperor to make pronouncements about the faith and to innovate upon the ancient dogmas of the church, which were decreed by the holy fathers. In the same year the winter torrent, flooding, entered the city of Edessa and destroyed many people. 10. 3. 2. 12. 21. In this year Masalmas campaigned against Caesarea in Cappadocia and took it. And a plague occurred in Syria. And the camels of the protosymboulos were burned at Saint Elias. And Muawiyah, the son of Hisham, campaigned against Roman territory and, after marching about, returned. In the same year, in the 9th indiction, in the summer season, a vapor as from a fiery furnace boiled up from the depths of the sea between the islands of Thera and Therasia for some days, and gradually thickening and petrifying by the heat of the fiery eruption, the entire smoke appeared fiery. And by the thickness of the earthy substance it sent up great pumice stones like certain hills over all of Asia Minor and Lesbos and Abydos and maritime Macedonia, so that the whole surface of this sea was full of floating pumice stones; and in the midst of so great a fire an island was formed from the earth and joined to the so-called Sacred Island, not having existed before, but just as the aforementioned islands, both Thera and Therasia, were once cast up, so also this one now in the times of the God-fighter 405 Leo. who, interpreting the divine wrath against him as being on his behalf, more shamelessly raised war against the holy and venerable icons, having as his ally Beser the apostate, a rival of equal irrationality. For both were full of want of education and of all ignorance, from which most evils come. And the crowds in the queenly city, being greatly distressed at the new teachings, plotted to attack him and killed some of the emperor's men who were taking down the icon of the Lord that was upon the great Chalke Gate, with the result that many of them were punished for their piety by mutilations, scourgings, exiles, and fines, especially those distinguished by noble birth and learning; so that the schools were also extinguished and the pious education that had prevailed from the time of Saint Constantine the Great until now, of which, along with many other good things, this Saracen-minded Leo became the destroyer. Therefore, moved by divine zeal in these matters, the men of Hellas and of the Cyclades islands revolted against him, having agreed on a great naval battle, with a certain Kosmas accompanying them to be crowned; Agallianos, the tourmarch of the Helladics, led the army, along with Stephen; and approaching the queenly city on the 18th of the month of April in the 10th indiction, they were defeated when they engaged the Byzantines, their ships having been set on fire by the prepared fire. And some were sunk near the Cistern, among whom Agallianos also drowned himself in full armor, while the survivors went over to the victor. And the heads of both Kosmas and Stephen were cut off, and the impious Leo and his like-minded followers increased in wickedness, intensifying the persecution against piety. And at the summer solstice of this 10th indiction, after the evil victory over his countrymen, a host of Saracens under two emirs was drawn up against Nicaea in Bithynia, Amer having advanced with 15,000 light-armed men and surrounded the unprepared city, and Muawiyah following with another 85,000, who after a long 406 siege and a partial destruction of the walls at the precinct of the honored holy fathers there, did not overcome it, on account of their well-received prayers to God, where also their venerable images were set up, honored until now by those of like mind.
